The first seven seconds are the awkward bit. Graphic violence shown there is ineligible for monetisation, according to Dexerto’s reading of the updated guidance. Scenes appearing between eight and 15 seconds can earn ad revenue, although the usual checks still apply.
YouTube defines graphic gaming violence as severe injury, bodily fluids, beheadings and dismemberment. Mild violence, limited blood and unrealistic action are generally acceptable. Videos built mainly around shocking violence — such as compilations of players attacking groups of non-player characters — can still be demonetised.
The guidance also says blurred or obscured violence can remain eligible. The rules apply to the video itself as well as its title, description, tags and thumbnail, so moving the violent clip out of the intro will not make a deliberately graphic thumbnail safe.
What this means for GTA 6 creators
YouTube’s separate policy announcement on graphic gaming content says realistic human characters, sustained graphic scenes and violence that is the main focus can lead to age restrictions. The platform specifically calls out torture and mass violence against non-combatants.
That policy is separate from monetisation. A video can avoid losing all ad revenue while still being age-restricted, and YouTube can deny ads for sexual violence, graphic torture, hate-motivated attacks, violence against minors or attacks targeting real named people. YouTube announced similar age restrictions for some gaming content in 2025, as Dexerto reported at the time.
GTA 6’s realistic characters and open-ended violence make the distinction relevant to the game’s creator community. Both systems give creators plenty to discuss before anyone starts testing the seven-second limit.
YouTube has also clarified that gaming and scripted content involving the use, sale or promotion of recreational drugs can earn ad revenue. Creators will still need to avoid presenting a video as a compilation of graphic violence, and keeping that violence out of the thumbnail remains the safer edit.
