Fandango, which is better known as a movie ticketing service, says it’s working on adding even more to its video-on-demand service, which has been renting out films that have just left theaters. According to Val Boreland, the president of entertainment at its parent company Versant, there will be a 20 percent-plus increase in the number of titles and streaming hours, including 3,500 hours of Versant-owned content. Not only that, but it is adding live sports coverage of Bundesliga, Germany’s top domestic soccer league, through USA Sports’ new long-term media rights agreement.
“We have many hours of content, but now we’re focusing on increasing the quality of content we have,” Boreland tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So we’re really focused on growing our premium content library. We’re curating with hit movies and fan-favorite franchises, popular television series. We’ll also have sports programming.”
Fandango is directly competing with Tubi, Roku and Pluto, but Fandango’s leadership believes its identity as a “theatrical-adjacent brand,” and its preexisting pages for recent theatrical releases will set it apart and keep people on its site.
“By making thousands of hours of compelling content available for free, Fandango continues to strengthen its position as a premier destination for entertainment,“ Boreland says in a statement. “We’re excited to extend the reach of our content, introduce viewers to new favorites and create even more value for audiences.”
