Xbox’s Latest Earnings Report Raises More Questions About Its Hardware Strategy

Microsoft reports another decline in Xbox hardware and content revenue, while PC gaming continues to deliver growth. As consoles get more expensive, Xbox may need to rethink what its next generation should offer.

Microsoft has reported its first-quarter fiscal 2027 results, and they don’t look good for Xbox. Hardware revenue dropped again in the most recent earnings report, and content and services revenue also fell from the same period a year ago. Other parts of Microsoft’s business have grown, but Xbox has struggled to find its footing in an increasingly difficult console market.

Xbox content and services revenue fell 2% year-on-year, and hardware revenue fell another 14%, according to the quarterly results. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s cloud business is still doing well, with Azure revenue rising 48%. However, Windows OEM and devices revenue fell 22%. These numbers paint a bleak picture for Xbox, especially since hardware sales have continued to decline despite Microsoft’s attempts to make its consoles more affordable.

Xbox leadership has said it wants to make the hardware more available, but supply constraints seem to have kept the company from meeting demand. However, given the current retail situation, availability doesn’t appear to be the biggest problem in all markets. Major retailers such as Best Buy, Target, and Amazon still have Xbox consoles in stock. The bigger issue seems to be what you’re expected to pay.

With an Xbox Series X reportedly reaching around $800, the console is becoming considerably more expensive than at launch.

You could previously get an Xbox Series X for $499, while the Xbox Series S had an estimated retail price of $299. Microsoft even promoted Xbox All Access, expanding the program to 12 countries during the holiday season, with plans to bring it to more markets in 2021. Those prices now feel like a completely different era for the brand.

This creates a difficult situation for Xbox because building an install base is already challenging enough without asking consumers to spend significantly more money on hardware. Even if Microsoft introduces something exciting with its next-generation platform, Project Helix, it will still need to convince people that the product is worth purchasing. When your current consoles are already struggling to attract buyers at higher prices, convincing consumers to spend even more on a new generation could be an even bigger challenge.

The problem isn’t that the Xbox needs more powerful hardware. Your current consoles already deliver gorgeous graphics, and most games have performance modes that can hit 60 FPS. Better performance and upgraded specs are always welcome, but it’s getting harder to convince average consumers they really need another hardware upgrade.

Microsoft has to make people feel better about investing in its next platform.

Features like disc-to-digital compatibility could be a more compelling selling point. Giving players more ways to access and manage their existing game libraries could be more appealing than simply promising better graphics. After all, if your games already look great and run well enough on current hardware, slightly better graphics might not be enough to convince you to buy another expensive console.

Microsoft CFO Amy Hood also offered insight into what the company expects in the coming quarters. According to her comments, Xbox hardware revenue is expected to decline again next quarter, while content and services revenue is projected to grow by mid-to-high single digits. Windows OEM revenue is expected to decline in the mid-30s next quarter, with additional declines expected for the balance of fiscal 2027.

Turning to the wider financial report, Microsoft’s cost of revenue fell 8%, partly because it amortized less of the intangibles linked to the Activision acquisition. Operating income also went up. The problem, however, is Xbox’s performance. Content and services revenue fell 2% because third-party content and Xbox Game Pass underperformed, partially offset by growth in first-party content.

That difference matters because it highlights where Xbox is succeeding right now—and where it’s still struggling. First-party releases support the business, but third-party content and subscription services don’t. It gets worse when you consider how much money Microsoft has poured into building its gaming ecosystem, then add another 14% decline in hardware revenue.

Asha Sharma addressed the results in a statement, noting that Xbox revenue fell 2% year-over-year in Q1, down from a 10% decline in the previous quarter. In other words, the rate of decline has slowed. That’s certainly better than seeing another major drop, but it doesn’t necessarily mean Xbox has returned to a healthy growth trajectory.

Sharma also highlighted several positive developments across Microsoft’s gaming business.

Minecraft and WoW Forever are said to have set records, while Call of Duty has delivered its most acclaimed release in over a decade. Microsoft’s PC platform revenue also rose by double digits. Those are accomplishments worth celebrating, but they also point to something interesting about where the company’s gaming business is doing best.

Minecraft still benefits from its huge PC audience, and WoW Forever is still a PC-focused game rather than a traditional console release. Call of Duty, meanwhile, has been quite well received, but it’s also on PlayStation. These successes show that Microsoft’s gaming portfolio can succeed across platforms, even when Xbox’s console business isn’t performing as well.

The growing importance of PC gaming may be especially relevant to Microsoft’s future strategy. If PC platform revenue keeps rising, the company may need to focus more on improving the experience for players who already have gaming PCs. Rather than relying solely on new console sales, Microsoft could explore other options by improving its existing platforms, growing its services, and offering more value to its current audience.

That doesn’t mean Xbox should abandon its console players. A loyal audience is still invested in the platform, but repeatedly expecting consumers to buy increasingly expensive hardware won’t solve every problem. Yes, when you walk into a retail store and see the Xbox on the shelves, the price is obvious.

For example, the Xbox Series S reportedly cost about $400 when it was repurchased after its initial launch price was much lower.

Microsoft, however, maintains that supply is limiting console sales. According to the company’s statement, demand remains higher than available consoles, and Microsoft is working to get more hardware into players’ hands through an expanded refurbishment program. The company also acknowledged progress, though considerable work remains.

This explanation doesn’t necessarily match what every consumer is experiencing. In some parts of the United States, including California, retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart appear to have Xbox consoles readily available. Microsoft’s ROG Xbox Ally X portable is also on display alongside the Xbox Series S and X. Availability will vary by region, and one person’s shopping experience doesn’t represent the market as a whole. But that begs the question: is supply the only thing holding back sales?

If Microsoft is struggling to meet demand in some areas but consoles sit on shelves in others, it’s worth exploring whether it could redistribute existing inventory. Simply producing more consoles won’t necessarily solve the problem if consumers aren’t willing to pay the asking price. The company needs to determine whether supply constraints, weaker demand, pricing, or a combination of all three drive declining hardware revenue.

Nintendo and PlayStation also face their own challenges.

Nintendo has had to increase prices, while PlayStation appears increasingly focused on generating more revenue from its existing install base. Xbox needs to establish a strategy that lets it do something similar without relying entirely on new hardware sales. Its recent financial results suggest the company still has work to do before it can do so.

However, there are reasons to remain optimistic about Microsoft’s gaming business. Amy Hood’s prediction of mid-to-high single-digit growth in Xbox content and services suggests the firm hopes upcoming first-party releases will help lift that figure. Microsoft is also continuing to revisit older games and roll out updates, including community-created features and improvements.

Those efforts could keep current players engaged without buying another console.

One interesting opportunity is bringing WoW Forever to Xbox consoles. The game already supports <a href="https://comicvibe.com/turtle-beach-drops-new-pc-variants-of-popular-controllers/” title=”Turtle Beach drops new PC variants of popular controllers”>controllers on PC, making a console release worth considering. Xbox has a substantial existing audience, and bringing one of the most profitable games of all time to that ecosystem could generate revenue from players who already own the hardware.

With so many Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players in Microsoft’s ecosystem, a console version could reach a significant audience. It also wouldn’t necessarily require consumers to purchase a new device. Players could simply download the game on hardware they already own, provided Microsoft and Blizzard can make the technical and platform arrangements work.

All in all, Microsoft’s most recent earnings report suggests Xbox needs to rethink its priorities. Project Helix may offer better performance and new capabilities, but better hardware alone won’t guarantee a successful launch. Hardware revenue is falling again, and current consoles are getting more and more expensive. Microsoft needs to offer something that makes its ecosystem more attractive without constantly asking consumers to spend more.

Microsoft is already seeing PC gaming as a key driver of its success, with first-party titles and community-driven updates that could help grow its existing audience. Maybe it’s time for Xbox to focus more on making the products and services that people already own more valuable, rather than waiting for the next expensive hardware generation to turn things around. The latest financial results show the bleeding has slowed, but the real challenge is turning that into sustainable expansion.
