Microsoft has begun testing a new Smart Download Client designed to fix one of the most persistent complaints among Xbox users: downloads that fail to take full advantage of a fast internet connection.
The feature is currently rolling out through the Xbox Insider Program, with early signs suggesting it could eventually extend beyond consoles and into the Xbox PC app as well.
Xbox Tests Smart Download Client Among Insiders
The Smart Download Client began appearing on July 23 for select members of the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring, part of console preview build 2608.260719-2200. That build reached the Alpha ring first, with Beta and Delta testers receiving it a day later.
According to Microsoft’s release notes, the feature checks which content servers are available shortly after a download starts, then tests connection speeds across multiple server pools to identify the fastest option for that specific install or update.
Rather than performing a single check and sticking with it, the client continues rerunning speed tests periodically throughout the download. If a faster server becomes available partway through, the system automatically switches connections to take advantage of it, aiming to reduce the sudden speed drops some Xbox owners have reported while downloading large games or patches.
This feature will help shave some time off download speeds as it will not remain on the specific server and assist players dynamically with its periodic checks.
Xbox Wants to Improve Your Download Speeds
According to Digital Trends, the new system targets a longstanding frustration among Xbox users, who have frequently reported downloads running far slower than their actual internet speeds would allow.
Server congestion, routing conditions, and regional availability can all affect how quickly content actually reaches a console, even when a user’s connection itself isn’t the bottleneck.
Early testing has already shown promising results. According to Windows Central, an Xbox Ally X reached its full 250 Mb/s connection speed while downloading games after the update was applied, suggesting the smarter server selection is delivering real improvements rather than a marginal tweak.
The Smart Download Client is one of several additions included in this Alpha Skip-Ahead build. The latest release also brings improvements to the Xbox Store’s game hub for easier DLC discovery, along with fixes for game installations, system updates, Remote Play, audio, and general console stability.
Coming to Xbox PC App Soon
Microsoft’s release notes describe the Smart Download Client as a console-focused update, and the company has not officially confirmed whether the Xbox app for Windows is using the same system.
Even so, early testing from Windows Central suggests the faster download behavior is already benefiting the Xbox PC app in some capacity, hinting that a wider rollout across platforms could follow.
Microsoft has not announced a specific timeline for when the feature will reach lower Xbox Insider rings, or the general public, and a broader release will depend on how the initial testing period plays out.
With modern games regularly exceeding 100GB in size, even shaving a few minutes off every download could turn into a meaningful quality of life improvement for Xbox Game Pass users once the feature moves beyond its current Insider-only testing phase.
