Microsoft has reportedly begun “quietly pitching” various film studios and others about not just a single game adaptation for the big screen – but a whole swath of them.
Puck News reports that the company’s troubled Xbox division is aiming to lean into movie and TV adaptations. However, rather than doing individual features one-by-one, the company is offering a major rights package spanning more than a dozen games.
These aren’t small fry either, with the likes of “Halo,” “World of Warcraft,” “Elder Scrolls” and “Diablo” all listed.
The outlet says some have already expressed interest in taking a look, including Netflix, Paramount, and Universal, but Microsoft is said to be seeking more than $300 million for a long-term deal – a number that’s making some balk.
Due to its ownership of so many studios, there have been some screen adaptations of Xbox-owned franchises to date, including box-office hit “Minecraft,” Amazon Prime’s acclaimed “Fallout” series, and the upcoming “Call of Duty” film. A “Halo” TV series was also produced, but proved a failure.
Xbox itself is in all sorts of strife, losing around 20% of its workforce in July, in its efforts to cut costs.
