    WONDER MAN season 2 canceled

In a shocking turn of events, Marvel Television has canceled Wonder Man, four months after the Disney+ series was renewed for a second season. Variety, who broke the news, reports that despite the renewal, a writers’ room for the second season was never opened, and the show’s writers (including co-creator Andrew Guest) have been released from their contracts.

Lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II responded to the news on Instagram, saying, “That’s life, right? Everything will shake out. I wanted to say thank you to everybody who WATCHED the show, ENJOYED the show, and SHARED that they enjoyed the show in some way or other. The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it.” He adds, “I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS.”

Released in its entirety on January 27, 2026, Wonder Man told the story of Simon Williams (Abdul-Mateen), an actor trying to land the title role in the remake of his favorite childhood movie, while hiding his superpowers from Hollywood, which has banned enhanced individuals from working in the industry. Along the way, he strikes up a friendship with Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), the disgraced thespian introduced in Iron Man 3.

The show, created by Guest and Destin Daniel Cretton, garnered critical acclaim for being a character-centric comedy drama instead of an action project like most MCU media. For his performance, Abdul-Mateen has earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, as well as nods from the Critics’ Choice Super Awards, the Dorians, the Astras, and the Black Reel TV Awards.

The reversal comes as more of a shock, given Cretton’s latest MCU project, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (out now), looks set to become the highest-grossing Marvel film since Deadpool & Wolverine. However, Wonder Man, which was shot from 2023 to 2024, was intended to be a miniseries, and its renewal likely caught everyone involved in the show off-guard. Cretton is currently balancing a Shang-Chi sequel, another likely Spider-Man film, and (outside Marvel) a live-action Naruto movie, while Abdul-Mateen himself has a Netflix series, Man on Fire, waiting on a possible renewal.

As it stands, the only live-action Marvel Disney+ series that have run for more than one season are Loki, and Daredevil: Born Again (season three of which will be released next year). While new live-action shows might be announced at D23 during the weekend of August 14-16, at the time of writing, the only ones lined up are VisionQuest (premiering October 14), and Born Again season three. With Marvel president Kevin Feigerecently stating the studio wants to avoid quality being “spread thin” over too many projects, it raises the question: just where will we see Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery again?

In the meantime, we’ll see if Abdul-Mateen picks up an Emmy for the role when the main awards are held on Monday, September 14.
