Nintendo seems allergic to discounts. For instance, Donkey Kong Bananza is just over a year old. It released for the Nintendo Switch 2 at $70, and right now it’s still sitting at $70.
That feels reasonable though, right? It’s still a new release and is meant only available on the Nintendo Switch 2. It’s still considered a premium experience for the platform. So let’s instead look at a different Donkey Kong game.
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze first released back in 2018 at the price of $60. That’s eight years ago. Oh wait, scratch that. Tropical Freeze didn’t first come out on the Nintendo Switch. That was a port of the Wii U game that had released four years prior to that in 2014. Really this is a 12 year old game. Surely it must have had a price reduction in that time. so where is it sitting at right now? You guessed it, $60. The game came out before the iPhone 6s, before Satoru Iwata passed away, and before the entire Disney sequel trilogy of Star Wars. And yet, it’s still full price digitally.
The point is, if you want to get a Nintendo game on sale, you need to take matters into your own hands. Nintendo won’t put a game on sale? Fine. Put the game on sale yourself.
There is a catch though. If you are a physical media kind of gamer, this won’t be your cup of tea. The eShop after all is for digital purchases only. But if you don’t care about that, there is no downside. The Nintendo eShop is home to more than 1,000 new, classic and indie games waiting to enter your digital library at a discount.
