Marvel owns tens of thousands of comic titles and globally famous characters, but the company’s new comic reading app is built by Webtoon Entertainment of South Korea.

On November 16th, Marvel fans will have a new app to read tens of thousands of the company’s comics. However, the platform is not being developed by an American tech company, but rather by Webtoon Entertainment, a subsidiary of Naver from South Korea .
The Marvel Comics app, developed from scratch by Webtoon for both mobile and website, combines the traditional page-turning of American comics with the vertical scrolling style that made Korean webtoons famous.
This also marks a new step in the relationship between Webtoon and major American comic book brands. The South Korean company is seeking to bring its experience in building mobile comic platforms to a content library with decades of history.
“The Marvel Comics app marks a new chapter in helping fans connect with the stories they love,” said Yongsoo Kim, President of Webtoon Entertainment.
According to him, combining Webtoon’s experience in building a digital comic platform with Marvel’s content library will make it easier for both long-time and new readers to explore the Marvel Universe.

One of the most noticeable changes is in the way it’s read.
American comics have traditionally been designed page-by-page. In contrast, webtoons have flourished with their vertical scrolling format, allowing users to continuously scroll their phone screens to read.
The new Marvel Comics will support both.

Webtoon also incorporates a Dynamic Cover Scroll interface, allowing users to browse through thousands of comic covers; a content recommendation system based on reading history and preferences; and Smart Panel Mode, which automatically enlarges individual panels to fit smaller screens.
The Pull List feature allows readers to follow their favorite series, characters, or authors and receive notifications as soon as new episodes are released.
These tools are integrated into a content library of over 35,000 digital stories, ranging from classic Marvel comics to current series, as well as content from Star Wars and 20th Century Studios.
David Abdo, CEO of Marvel Comics, said the company sees a large number of readers wanting to read comics in a digital environment.
“We know there’s a huge readership that wants to experience comics in digital form, and there’s hardly a richer content library than Marvel Comics,” he said.
According to Abdo, Marvel chose Webtoon because it is one of the leading platforms in the field and expects the app to continue evolving in the way readers discover and read stories.
The app will be introduced to the public at New York Comic Con from October 8th to 11th, before officially launching on November 16th.
Marvel Comics offers two subscription packages. The Base package costs $9.99
per month or $69.99
per year, with new comics being added three months after print. The Ultimate package costs $12.49
per month or $99.99
per year, reducing this period to one month.
Webtoons penetrate deeper into the North American market.
With Webtoon, Marvel Comics also demonstrated another direction for expansion: bringing webtoon technology and reading methods into existing intellectual property repositories with large fan bases in the US.
Webtoon currently has approximately 155 million monthly active users across its ecosystem platforms. In addition to Webtoon, the ecosystem includes Wattpad, Studio N, LINE Manga, and eBookJapan.
The company’s relationship with Marvel didn’t begin with the new app either.

Webtoon has been collaborating with Marvel since 2022 to produce the miniseries Eternals: The 500 Year War . Following that, the company continued to bring traditional comic book franchises to its platform in a vertical scrolling format for mobile users.
In 2025, this relationship expanded significantly. Webtoon announced a partnership with Disney to bring approximately 100 stories to a dedicated section on the English-language app. The first works included Amazing Spider-Man , Star Wars , Alien , Avengers , and Disney As Old As Time: A Twisted Tale .
To date, Webtoon’s role has advanced a step further: it’s no longer simply bringing Marvel comics to its platform, but is directly building the platform for Marvel to distribute comics to readers.
Webtoon’s presence in the US is also becoming increasingly prominent. This year’s New York Comic Con marks the third consecutive year the company has opened its own booth at the event.
In addition to showcasing Marvel Comics, Webtoon will create an experiential space for FOG LAND , host autograph sessions with authors, and hold various discussion sessions about digital comics. A separate session on October 9th, titled “That Time Deadpool Fell into a WEBTOON,” will introduce a new Marvel project being developed for the Webtoon format.
Yongsoo Kim believes the Marvel Comics app is the next step in connecting long-standing content libraries with how readers today find and read comics in the digital environment.
“By combining Webtoon’s experience in building a digital comic platform with Marvel’s storytelling heritage, we’re making it easier for both long-time and new readers to explore the Marvel Universe,” he said.
