Hasan Piker’s growing influence among young voters has sparked a debate over whether his progressive appeal could help Democrats or alienate moderate supporters.

The US Democratic Partyis facing a crisis ahead of the upcoming midterm elections in November. At the centre of the chaos is the 35-year-old Turkish-American podcaster, Hasan Piker. He has a strong following with three million followers on the streaming platform Twitch.
A self-declared democratic socialist, Piker has seamlessly integrated his left-wing progressive political commentary into his daily entertainment shenanigans, which include advice related to the gym, dating, and other lifestyle aspects.
Why Is Piker Being Considered an Ideological Liability by the Moderates?
Hasan Piker, known online as HasanAbi, has been a Twitch streamer since 2018. His content is a combination of current affairs commentary, political debates, and international news with gameplay and reaction content.
Politically, Piker is seen as a solution to reach an audience/voter demographic that gets skipped by the mainstream channels. However, his extreme rhetoric and controversies are putting him at a flashpoint in dividing Democratic Politics.
Piker has been in direct conflict with U.S. foreign policy as he showed open support for militant groups such as Yemen-based Houthi rebels. He labelled their actions as a just and moral form of resistance. He also praised Hamas and the communist style regimes of China and the Soviet Union, suggesting that the US should learn from them.
His comments against the American Jews also drew widespread backlash, condemning him as anti-semitic. The comments suggested that if American Jews continued to promote aid to Israel, “eventually someone’s going to come around and take action” against them.
His most famous controversial comment came in a 2019 live stream, where he said that “America deserved 9/11”. Though he has repeatedly apologized for the statement, it is used against him by Republicans and frequently used to counter his party’s ideologies altogether. Trump and the Republicans use this as a way to paint the Democratic Party as “America-hating liberals”.

Despite Piker being a political time bomb, the Minnesota representativeIlhan Omar has been in open alliance with the influencer. Instead of avoiding Piker, she has embraced his platform completely, appearing on his Twitch channel and connecting with young voters.
Omar sees this as a way to promote the democratic party’s ideologies in an unfiltered and organic way. Their alliance also comes as a result of a deeply shared view of US foreign policy, with both of them being highly critical of the Israeli government and the US military aid to them. They have actively engaged in fundraising and digital rallies aimed at mobilizing the anti-war left.
Piker has been hostile to Trump’s executive policies, considering him an absolute authoritarian and fascist. He views him not just as a political opponent, but as a total existential threat to democratic institutions, marginalized communities, and the working class. Despite his frustration with the moderate democrats, his anti-Trump stance is absolute.
Democratic Party In An Ideological Divide
A polarizing figure of the democratic party, Hasan Piker has become the centre of the divide between progressive democrats and moderates. The progressive democrats, desperate for digital relevance, see Piker as the perfect antidote for reaching voters. They are seeking to replicate the effect Joe Rogan had on Trump winning the election in 2024.
Piker streams almost 8 hours a day every week. The socialist democrats want to use his presence to tap young voters. The moderates, on the other hand, see Piker’s radical ideas and comments as something extreme. They believe that these ideas would alienate the central swinging voters.
