What Is Streamer University? All About Kai Cenat’s Gen Z Phenomenon

Unless your kid is headed to college in the fall, the university they’re likely talking about this week is something completely different: Streamer University, which just wrapped up its second academic year.

The epic five days for influencer hopefuls is from mastermind Kai Cenat , who has been building a social media empire for years. He launched his YouTube presence in 2018 before later switching to live-streaming platform Twitch. That’s where he became a Gen Z household name as his “subathon,” a streaming marathon, skyrocketed in popularity and broke the Twitch record for the most concurrent subscribers after 30 days of consecutive streaming.

    But Wait… What Is Streaming?

Before we get into an explanation of the university, let’s talk about the medium behind it: streaming, one of the newest forms of entertainment for today’s teens. This is when creators broadcast live video content on platforms like Twitch and YouTube Live.

The new content approach has been embraced by Gen Z because the content is so authentic; it’s basically reality TV, but entirely unedited, with scenes ranging from real-time cooking to video game commentaries. Teens can interact with their favorite streamers, commenting in live chats and sending them virtual currency. This new form of media has become a way for teens to be in control, and to feel like they are contributing to a larger community.

    Enter Streamer University

Streamer University is simply an extension of streaming culture. And while the concept may seem outlandish or silly to parents, the obsession is real for teens, who have called it “lit” and “swaggy,” and said it “needs to be on Netflix.” So, it’s worth understanding.

Simply put, it’s a five-day crash course in how to stream effectively. And it certainly stuck a chord, as the makeshift “university” received over a million applicants, from beginners and famous streamers alike. It accepted only 100 admitted students — that’s a .01% acceptance rate! — then invited them to move onto campus, which is the small Hendrix College in Arkansas (though next year’s, it was just announced, will be in Europe). There, they learn lessons like “Internet Beef 101” and “Monetization for Dummies” from celebrity professors including Lizzo and T-Pain, while reserving the nights for partying (just like any other university).

But at this school, “detention,” which can be doled out for hosting parties and missing curfew, means having to turn off your camera for an hour, losing precious airtime.

While this might seem like a waste of time and money, Kai pays for the entire event, so tuition is free to small creators. It’s a chance for unknown streamers to thrive.

For many students, enrolling is life changing; some gain millions of followers and a flourishing career as a streamer — which can bring incomes of up to $200,000 a month.

Yonna is one of those creators who, after being accepted to Streamer University in 2025, grew her platform from a few thousand followers to millions, generating cash from subscribers, donations, and brand deals.

This year, she was appointed the club director of drama by “Dean” Cenat after becoming a fan favorite and university success story.

So, parents: Yes, this university may only last a few days. But for the streamers inside it, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. And for teens watching from their own computers, the community and entertainment are priceless.
