Was Absolute Pyg Hiding in 'Absolute Batman' #1 All Along?!

One of the smartest things about Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’sAbsolute Batman isn’t just how radically it reinvents Gotham – it’s how meticulously everything appears to have been planned from the very beginning.

Unlike the main DC Universe, where Batman’s rogues gallery has grown organically over more than 85 years of publishing history, the Absolute Universe was built as a single, unified story from day one. Rather than introducing villains one at a time over decades, Snyder has hinted that the entire mythology was mapped out before the first issue ever hit shelves.

That’s become increasingly apparent as the series has unfolded.

Early on, readers learned this version of Bruce Wayne isn’t a billionaire but a blue-collar construction worker forced to build his own tools and weapons. We also discovered that the Absolute Joker is the wealthy architect manipulating Gotham from the shadows, with the mysterious Ark M serving as the birthplace of many of the universe’s monsters and villains.

As the story has progressed, each issue has peeled back another layer of Joker’s grand design. Recent revelations have even suggested that Joker orchestrated the chain of events that ultimately created Batman himself, while earlier issues have been filled with subtle Scarecrow imagery that only makes complete sense in hindsight.

Now it looks like another one of those long-game teases has been hiding in plain sight.

During DC’s San Diego Comic-Con 2026 panel, Snyder and Dragotta revealed several upcoming Absolute characters, including the arrival of Professor Pyg, who will play a major role in the upcoming Absolute Batman: Ark Mseries. The creative team also confirmed that Absolute Batman reaches the end of its first major story arc with October’s oversized Issue #25 before launching into the next phase of the series.

But eagle-eyed readers quickly spotted something even more interesting.

It appears Professor Pyg was actually hiding in Absolute Batman #1 all along.

A brief background moment featuring Joker includes what fans now believe is Pyg, meaning Snyder quietly planted another major character nearly two years before officially revealing him. It’s the same kind of breadcrumb trail readers later noticed with Scarecrow, reinforcing the idea that the Absolute Universe has been carefully seeded with clues from the very beginning.

For longtime Batman fans, Professor Pyg is a particularly exciting addition.

Created by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert, Professor Pyg first appeared in 2007 and quickly became one of Batman’s most disturbing modern villains. Wearing his grotesque stitched pig mask and butcher’s apron, Pyg is less a traditional criminal than a deranged surgeon obsessed with creating “perfection,” transforming his victims into horrifying, mindless Dollotrons through grotesque body modification.

He’s become one of Batman’s most memorable 21st-century villains, thanks in part to appearances across numerous comics, animated projects, and the hit video game Batman: Arkham Knight.

His arrival also feels like a natural fit for Absolute Batman.

With Ark M already established as theove to be another crucial piece of Joker’s larger plan. If Joker is financing the operation, is Pyg the twisted mind responsible for creating many of the monsters lurking inside Ark M? Could characters like Bane, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and others ultimately trace their origins back to his experiments?

We’re only weeks away from finding out.

Snyder has said Issue #25 marks the conclusion of the series’ opening act and the beginning of an entirely new phase.
