“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has made a record-breaking start at the North American box office, earning an estimated $168 million on its opening day to set a new domestic opening-day record.

The latest Spider-Man film surpassed the previous record held by “Avengers: Endgame”, which grossed $157 million on its first day in 2019. Sony Pictures is projecting an opening weekend of $325 million, while industry estimates suggest the film could earn as much as $358 million by Sunday. If that figure is achieved, it would become the biggest opening weekend in North American box office history.

The current record for the highest domestic opening weekend is held by “Avengers: Endgame”, with $357 million. It is followed by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” at $260 million, “Avengers: Infinity War” at $257 million, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $247 million.

The film picks up after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, in which Doctor Strange erased the world’s memory of Peter Parker. In “Brand New Day”, Peter must learn to fight on without the support of those closest to him, including MJ (Zendaya) and his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon). The cast also includes Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Liza Colón-Zayas and Tramell Tillman.

Meanwhile, “The Odyssey” finished second at the Friday box office with $14.5 million as it entered its third weekend in North American theatres. The Christopher Nolan-directed epic is expected to earn another $51 million by Sunday, bringing its domestic total to $395 million.

Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” placed third after collecting $1.8 million on Friday. The animated sequel is projected to add $6.2 million over the weekend, pushing its North American total to $461 million after four weekends.

Rounding out the top five were “Minions & Monsters” and “Moana”. “Minions & Monsters” earned $1.66 million on Friday and is expected to reach $168 million domestically by the end of its fifth weekend. “Moana” added $1.6 million on Friday and is projected to finish the weekend with a North American total of $114 million after four weekends.
