Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) increased its presence at the 46th National Sports Collectors Convention near Chicago as the retail giant continues to develop its marketplace for trading cards, sports memorabilia and other collectibles
The five-day convention attracted more than 100,000 visitors last year, while early indications suggested attendance increased by approximately 20% this year, based on noticeably heavier traffic across the exhibition floor.
Walmart operated a larger booth than at the previous year’s convention and reportedly attracted greater visitor interest as representatives discussed the company’s emerging collectibles marketplace with attendees.
Walmart develops invite-only collectibles marketplace
The retailer’s marketplace remains under development and currently accepts sellers on an invite-only basis as Walmart works to build its presence in the fast-growing collectibles sector.
Some recent transactions through the platform have exceeded $30,000 for signed memorabilia, with Walmart generating revenue by collecting commissions on sales completed through its marketplace.
The company is also using competitive incentives to encourage additional merchants to join the platform. These include commission rates starting as low as 4.8%, $2,000 in fulfilment services credits and $1,000 in search engine marketing credits.
The strategy could help Walmart attract specialist collectibles sellers while expanding the range of higher-value products available through its broader e-commerce ecosystem.
Walmart partners with GradedGuard as collectibles demand grows
Walmart has also partnered with GradedGuard to produce a limited-edition Walmart-branded plastic protective case designed for PSA-graded cards.
The cases generated notable interest among collectors and appeared on secondary resale platforms at prices exceeding $100, highlighting the strength of demand for limited-edition accessories linked to the collectibles market.
Growth in professional card grading provides another indication of increasing activity across the sector. Beckett reported that the number of cards submitted for grading during July increased 102% compared with the same month a year earlier.
The company, which is owned by Collectors, temporarily suspended some operations as it worked to add capacity and accommodate the increase in demand.
Mizuho sees large opportunity in U.S. trading card market
Mizuho estimates that the U.S. trading card market is worth between $10 billion and $20 billion, highlighting the scale of the opportunity Walmart could target as it expands its marketplace offering.
