VirtuaLens announced the launch of its new Mix and Match feature for the company’s immersive virtual reality patient education platform, expanding surgeons’ ability to demonstrate personalized IOL strategies to patients considering cataract surgery.
The VirtuaLens platform and headset are designed to simulate the visual differences among IOL options before surgery, giving patients an immersive way to experience potential postoperative vision rather than relying solely on traditional educational materials.
With the Mix and Match software update, surgeons can assign different types of IOLs to each eye to demonstrate treatment approaches intended to optimize vision across multiple distances. For example, physicians can simulate a multifocal IOL in one eye and an extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL in the other, as well as other combinations involving different IOL technologies.
The update also includes a Monovision Dominance Invert function, which allows surgeons to switch eye dominance during a consultation. According to the company, the capability enables patients to compare different monovision configurations and gain a better understanding of how each approach could affect their everyday vision.
The additions are intended to address a patient education challenge that has become increasingly relevant as cataract treatment strategies become more individualized. VirtuaLens said its immersive simulations are designed to make those concepts easier for patients to visualize while supporting individualized discussions between surgeons and patients about their treatment options.
Alongside the software update, VirtuaLens introduced a Mix and Match Vision Tutorial to help surgeons, technicians, and other practice staff learn to use the new functionality. The guided tutorial provides an overview of the feature and is intended to support practices as they incorporate the technology into patient consultations.
