Valve rolled out SteamVR 2.17 on September 10, introducing several new features including a quick access menu, Steam achievements in VR, and improved streaming capabilities as anticipation builds for the Steam Frame VR headset launch expected mid-September. The update notably adds <a href="https://comicvibe.com/overwatch-season-5-will-add-a-new-kind-of-support-try-to-solve-2-roster-headaches/” title=”Overwatch Season 5 Will Add a New Kind of Support, Try to Solve 2 Roster Headaches”>support for 32-bit OpenXR applications, allowing compatibility with more VR software. Valve explained this bridges a technical gap where 32-bit apps on 64-bit Windows previously could not detect SteamVR as an OpenXR runtime.
Additional features in SteamVR 2.17 include an enhanced VR dashboard bar with notifications, volume, brightness controls, and a laser pointer length setting. Valve also improved streaming performance on slow connections and fixed graphical stutters on NVIDIA cards.
Valve’s update also includes initial USB streaming support, although it requires the new Steam Client Beta for full functionality. Linux users benefit from better wired headset support and crash fixes related to texture handling in Steam Link streaming.
Meanwhile, rumors indicate that Steam Frame pre-orders could start as early as the week of September 14. Insider reports suggest Valve may use a first-come, first-served reservation system, potentially favoring scalpers and bots over a randomized lottery method used in past hardware launches. According to leaked backend information, buyers joining the pre-order queue might receive priority based on their position rather than random selection. This approach raises concerns about limited stock being quickly monopolized, as has happened with previous Valve hardware releases.
Despite a delay in February 2026 that allowed Valve to stockpile Steam Frame units, shortages remain a risk. Enthusiasts continue to await official confirmation of the headset’s price and release date alongside the ongoing rollout of SteamVR enhancements.
