Valve has released the on Steam on Linux devices

Lepton creates a container with an Android environment and connects it to SteamOS. This allows APK files to be run without the need to port the game to Linux separately. The solution is primarily intended for porting VR games from Android headsets to Steam Deck.

The tool works without root access, and each game runs in its own container. Lepton utilises graphics drivers, Steam libraries and Vulkan components from the underlying operating system.

Valve has retained only the components necessary for running games within the Android environment. As a result, Lepton is not designed to work fully with standard Android applications, and non-VR scenarios may be unstable.

Lepton utilises the work of Waydroid, Anbox, Halium and Hybris. Valve has published its own tool code under the MIT licence, whilst the Android image containing components from third-party projects is released under the GPL 3.0.

Valve has announced support for Android games on Steam alongside Steam Frame. Developers can publish APK files in the store, whilst users can install and run them just like regular Steam games.

In terms of its purpose, Lepton is similar to Proton, which allows Windows games to be run on SteamOS. However, whilst Proton translates system calls and graphics APIs, Lepton runs the game inside an Android container.
