This week, Unity announced Unity Spark, an AI-powered web tool that generates 3D games using simple text commands. The tool complements Google’s new Playground (another generative AI game development platform) and will launch in a closed beta later this year.
Spark runs entirely in the desktop browser, precluding the need for software downloads. (Finished games, however, can be downloaded to the user’s computer.) Users can type in ideas to generate and change 3D game elements, and Unity’s Asset Store offers premade art items like capes and sunrise backgrounds. Unity says multiple people can collaborate on one project and multiple AI agents can work at the same time.
Unity CEO Matt Bromberg says Spark doesn’t generate a complete game from a single prompt. Instead, the platform helps users start, iterate, and polish their projects.
Google Playground is a separate browser-based platform that lets users generate and customize playable games through prompts. Google launched Playground in the US for people aged 18 and over. Users can share games made in Unity Spark through Playground, and Unity plans to integrate Spark with Playground later this year.
As with all AI, Unity will use a credit-based pricing system tied to AI tokens, with some free credits and paid credits thereafter. The company has not finalized the full pricing structure.
Those who hope to be included in the closed beta can join a waitlist on the Unity Spark landing page.
