Ubisoft has announced that Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, the company’s flagship blockchain game, will shut down on October 30, bringing an end to what was arguably its largest experiment with NFT-powered gaming. The announcement comes only months after Ubisoft removed the title’s blockchain functionality, marking the final chapter in a project that reflected the publisher’s long-running interest in Web3 technology.

According to Ubisoft, players will be able to continue playing Champions Tactics until the October shutdown date, but in-game purchases have already been disabled. Once the servers are taken offline, player accounts and progression will no longer be accessible, effectively ending the online-only strategy game. Ubisoft has published a FAQ explaining the closure and advising players on what to expect during the game’s remaining months of operation.

The shutdown follows a significant change in direction earlier this year. In May, Ubisoft removed the game’s blockchain systems, ending wallet integration and transitioning NFT-based assets into conventional in-game items. By that point, Champions Tactics had largely become a traditional online game rather than the blockchain-powered experience it launched as. While Ubisoft presented the move as a way to simplify the game and improve accessibility, the latest announcement suggests it also served as a step toward the title’s eventual retirement.

The closure also concludes several years of Ubisoft’s public experimentation with blockchain technology. The publisher previously introduced initiatives such as Ubisoft Quartz before launching Champions Tactics, positioning the title as one of its most ambitious attempts to integrate NFTs into mainstream game development. Throughout that period, however, the company’s blockchain strategy was met with widespread skepticism from players and industry observers alike. Ubisoft executives repeatedly defended the technology’s long-term potential, but many consumers questioned its practical benefits for players.

Beyond the controversy surrounding NFTs, Champions Tactics also experienced technical difficulties during its lifespan. The game faced criticism over matchmaking issues and other gameplay problems, while reception to its blockchain elements remained mixed. Although Ubisoft has not attributed the shutdown to any single factor, the decision follows years of challenges for the project and a gradual shift away from the Web3 features that originally defined it.

The end of Champions Tactics does not necessarily signal the end of Ubisoft’s interest in emerging technologies, nor has the publisher announced that it is abandoning blockchain initiatives entirely. However, it does bring to a close one of the gaming industry’s most prominent NFT experiments. Whether remembered as an ambitious attempt to explore new forms of digital ownership or as a product of gaming’s brief blockchain era, Champions Tactics will stand as an important chapter in Ubisoft’s evolving approach to innovation and live-service games.
