Tristan is back and so is Mrs. Hall!

(Welcome to 1945! Jimmy suddenly turns five, Tristan returns from Italy, and the Skeldale kitchen turns into a biohazard. Photo: PBS

Hello all you merry Yorkshire fans! Our time has come again. I can’t believe I’ve written a recap like this for six seasons, but I hope I can write ten more. If you watched this premiere episode and felt like you forgot about last season, you’re definitely not alone. We’ve all been victims of time jumps. Jimmy is already a kid! The last time we saw him, it was his first birthday, and now he’s following James around and looking like a real five-year-old. Also, James and Helen live in a farmhouse, Tristan is serving in the army in Italy, and Mrs. Hall is missing.

However, there is a quick side note regarding the introduction of this episode. After your and me’s favorite theme song (“DUM dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dummm dummmmm”), it informs us that it is May 1945 and that “the war in Europe is nearing its end.” Excuse me, is this 20th century amateur time? Of course, if it’s 1945, the war in Europe is coming to an end. Let’s restart school! Even if this is somehow not common knowledge anymore, are you really explaining the end of World War II to a group of people who spontaneously watch men in tweed jackets mend a sheep’s broken leg while singing Gilbert and Sullivan? Maybe it’s for kids to watch with their parents. But if that were the case, it’s obvious that no one would let their young children watch Ken Burns’ War, and as a parent I wouldn’t make the same mistake. They have to learn someday.

Well, Mrs. Hall is gone and everything is in shambles. Bills are late, work is horribly disorganized, there’s a miniature horse in the study, Siegfried passes out on the couch, and a scruffy woman in a trench coat sits next to him. (Okay, she seems very nice, but all the women except Mrs. Hall are dead to me.) Tristan returns to the house and greets James, while Siegfried limps the woman out the window. This is not sustainable, Siegfried. James and Tristan agree, and James learns that the last time things were this bad was after Siegfried’s wife died. It was only resolved by the arrival of Mrs. Hall. Mrs. Hall is the oil that makes everything go! Either you can’t remove her or everything will get stuck and the loose sprocket will roll off into the corner. This is a metaphor, but Siegfried probably has some sprockets rolling too.

Mrs. Hall has to come back, but she also has to talk about this week’s case, a border collie with arthritis. She was trained to herd farmer Archie’s sheep and stand in, but after falling through barbed wire, James diagnoses her with arthritis in her foot. Farmer Archie appears to be trying to get her off, but Siegfried goes behind James and gives Archie some painkillers from his bag. Is it in a medicine bottle? No, it’s a loose pill lying around and he tastes it to make sure it’s the right one. Siegfried, what is this, the bottom of my wallet? I know it’s unacceptable to not have pills in my bag because my friend said so in a horrified tone.

These drugs were effective, but Collie got into a fight with a stray dog while guarding the sheep (which he was successful with, as he is a very good dog) and had to be taken for surgery. It looks like Archie will eventually retire as a pet as he realizes the error of his ways towards the animals that have worked for him for 10 years.

So, Mrs. Hall. She’s at Sunderland. Yes, my American friends, of course I made a map and I will tell you where it is. Located on the coast, an hour and 45 minute drive northeast of the Dales, it has an average of 4.8 reviews from the Antiquities Society. Probably because it’s January now, hotels everywhere are suspiciously cheap. Mrs. Hall is in Sunderland because Edward and his wife and daughter are in Sunderland. Apparently she had just suddenly left Skeldale to care for Edward, who had been injured in the war. I don’t object to this strictly based on the rules of what is right and decent, but I object based on my own rules of “Why aren’t Siegfried and Mrs. Hall married yet?”

James and Tristan go to Sunderland and gently encourage her to come back, which naturally leads to Tristan blurting out how bad everything is and that he needs to come back and fix it. Mrs. Hall, she agrees to come for a few days after Tristan tells her that Siegfried is worse than when they first met. Of course, Jacob and Tristan tell Siegfried nothing of this. Little does he know that the place he loved most in life and the heartbeat of his hometown is about to return. (If you don’t support Siegfried/Mrs. Hall, please ignore these parts or read other people’s very interesting summaries.)

Mrs. Hall arrives at Skeldale and rings the bell. That’s your home! No need to ring a bell! Why does my family keep being separated? She polishes the brass sign a little with a handkerchief, and I become the human version of the crying emoji. James is the only one there and he shows her around. The kitchen is very bad. The cupboard is very bad. It’s terrible everywhere. There are a million cans of sardines in the cupboard. Why, Siegfried? I mean, I know why, but why?

Siegfried returned to the clean kitchen. He is confused, but there he meets Mrs. Hall. “I had it in the pantry,” she tells him. “Forever?” he asks. How can you not love them? They are very awkward with each other, but in such a way that Siegfried tells her that one of his pet rats is named Gerald because he has a little mustache. This is a callback from Gerald! Don’t ever come back, Gerald. Unless it’s Gerald the rat, he can stay.

Mrs. Hall quickly fixes everything. The room is all tidy and tidy, and she mediates an argument between Siegfried and James about the arthritic dog, telling them to go see the dog because two heads are better than one. Siegfried says he read an article about a two-headed snake that bit him to death. look! oil! sprocket! Later, she and Siegfried play Scrabble, only to find out that he did not attend Edward’s wedding. He said he tried other housekeepers, but none were good enough. But then Siegfried ruins things in a very Siegfried way by saying that Mrs. Hall fixed everything and took away their autonomy and now they know how to do things on their own. I see, Siegfried! you! Because 24 hours ago, there was a miniature pony in your study. She mentions that James has a different opinion and asks if Siegfried thinks he is a problem to be solved, to which Mrs. Hall replies, “I wouldn’t say that.”

Now, Mrs. Hall has some feedback. If she gave me that answer, I would immediately turn my back and walk into the ocean. If someone asks you, “Do you think there’s something wrong with you as a person?”, say, “No, that’s not what I meant at all,” and then clarify what you meant. Perhaps there is something wrong with their behavior! Perhaps you are worried that they need help. All of this applies to Siegfried as well, and his anger is also out of control. He jumps out, but only to go dancing (not towards the sea).

The next day, the loose woman from earlier (Susan) is in the kitchen with Mrs. Hall. Siegfried finds out that they know each other from church. Later, when Mrs. Hall tried to help him, he bit her. He asks Susan to leave. Unfortunately, Mrs. Hall was only snapped and not followed up, as Tristan arrived with one injured dog and all the vets had to search up the hill for the other injured dog (the one guarding the sheep). During the search, James tells Siegfried that he is unstable, short-tempered, and forgetful. Siegfried doesn’t want to talk about his feelings, but explodes, “She left us! What was I supposed to do? Pretend to be happy? Pretend to be fine?” Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. It’s all happening. James tells him that if he keeps pushing people away, eventually they will leave. “Well, thank you very much! That’s very sharp!” It’s moments like this that keep us all coming back.

While the men go out looking for dogs and sheep, Mrs. Hall packs her things and heads to the station. Realizing the error of his ways, Siegfried uses all his strength to create a “run to the departure station to stop the woman from leaving” moment, jumping in front of two (stopped) trains and shouting “Mrs. Hall!” before finally getting her attention in “AUDREY.” my heart. It stopped. “I tried to find a replacement. It doesn’t work, because they’re not you.” What on earth is this? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Very good! In these dark times, I thought all good things were out of reach, but here they are. Siegfried tells her that she can take her time and decide whether or not to come back, and demands an answer right away. Mrs. Hall saw everyone hugging around the station and asked everyone what was going on. “Oh, well, the war is over,” Siegfried tells her.

he! Ignored! end! World war! Because Mrs. Hall’s stay was more important to him. Have any of us ever understood love? She hugs him. Everyone is back. The war is over. Let’s heal the animals.
