Blue eyeshadow is back, but not as you remember it
The colour blue is having the time of its life! Blue eyeshadow might be all over runways and social feeds right now, but its shade story goes back much further than now, or the ’60s when the colour had a major moment in makeup
Archaeological, artistic, and literary evidence suggests that blue pigments were used around the eyes in Ancient Egypt, where the hue and its stylings were associated with beauty and status. Most of us probably know the look through popular depictions of Cleopatra, whose striking blue eye makeup has become one of history’s most enduring beauty references.
The shade returned in the 1960s, when the Mod (Modernist) movement embraced icy blue lids and graphic eye looks that felt futuristic, yet playful. Then came the 1980s, when blue eyeshadow reached peak popularity, where bold, frosted shades perfectly matched the decade’s bigger-is-better attitude.
