The international film festival celebrating women producers, writers, and directors runs October 22-25 at Sherman Oaks Regal Cinemas; October 24 animation block includes ‘Bananya’ anime episode, ‘A Bird’s Wish,’ ‘Tetanus,’ and ‘Braving the Night.’
TMS Entertainment is sponsoring the animated shorts competition at the 22nd LA Femme International Film Festival, running October 22-25 at Regal Cinemas Sherman Oaks Galleria in Los Angeles; the competition screens Saturday, October 24 at 2 p.m. The program includes a special episode celebrating the 10th anniversary of TMS’s anime series Bananya, with producer Masako Iwata attending from Japan; the episode competes alongside the other animated shorts.
Bananya follows magical kittens who live inside bananas and lead secret lives in an ordinary household — when no one is watching, they play, explore, and get into mischief, and Bananya’s greatest wish is to bathe in chocolate with all his banana cat friends. The series returned for a second season on Crunchyroll back in 2019, with more than 20 new characters.
Iwata began her career on TMS Entertainment’s story development team, working on series including Kamisama Kiss, Fruits Basket, and HIGH CARD; her credits include episode scripts and opening theme lyrics. She is currently working on Netflix‘s BAKI-DOU and developing two upcoming anime projects for TMS.
The competition lineup also includes A Bird’s Wish, directed by Swiss filmmaker Gan de Lange; The Sweepers: Laurie Poons Interview, directed by Marge Dean; Viva City, from Brazilian filmmaker Viva Cidade; Tetanus, directed by Seoyoung Jeon; Alienated, directed by Dylan Womack; The Escort, directed by Rick Williamson and written and produced by Regina Redwing; Braving the Night, directed by Joshua Kushner and Luisa G. Carranza, which premiered at this year’s HollyShorts; Goodnight Goodnight, directed by Kiki Callaghan; and Sana Lee’s Sanjupalia, directed by South Korean filmmaker Jin-hwa Lee.
Now in its 22nd year, LA Femme International Film Festival celebrates and advances the work of women producers, writers, and directors from around the world. TMS Entertainment, one of Japan’s largest and most established anime studios, holds a library of more than 13,000 episodes across 500 titles, including Detective Conan, Lupin the 3rd, Dr. STONE, and SAKAMOTO DAYS.
Tickets and passes are available on the festival’s site. More information can be found here.
