WWE
WWE Raw saw JD McDonagh get retribution on a Funko Pop in his feud with Joe Hendry, and it might be time for both stars to move on.
Over the past few weeks, JD McDonagh has been in the sights of Joe Hendry, with the size of the Judgment Day member’s head playing a prominent part in their rivalry.
This was made more apparent with Hendry accompanied by a ‘life-size’ Funko Pop of McDonagh leading to the match on the October 19 episode of WWE Raw that saw the effigy (and a guitar) destroyed in a fury-filled attack.
With McDonagh victorious, perhaps WWE creative will have something new for both stars:
The big head game
The size of McDonagh’s head has been a talking point for several years now, with references going beyond WWE, and its history being charted to the British wrestling scene.
McDonagh commented on first getting an inkling that it was a thing during an appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, saying it was when he was wrestling in the United Kingdom that he would hear chants of “he’s got the whole world in his head”, in a soccer style.
While it has been referenced by WWE stars previously, it’s through the Hendry feud that his apparent resemblance to a Funko Pop has been more obviously manifested.
The JD McDonagh creative issue
JD McDonagh has an underlying aggressive streak that is seen in some of his in-ring work, although it doesn’t really come across in his promo work as a member of Judgment Day. The Funko Pop comparison is an example of this, with the star coming across as petulant, but that’s very much the creative card he has been dealt.
A former NXT Champion and two-time World Tag Team Champion, McDonagh should be far from done when it comes to title runs, although it’s difficult to envisage it in his current spot. Whether that future sees him continue in Judgment Day or break out on his own, targeting the Intercontinental Championship could elevate the star, victorious or not.
Believe in Joe Hendry
Called up to the main roster in April, Joe Hendry has spent years evolving and refining his character, with a solid grasp on what’s needed at every opportunity.
The feud with Judgment Day has certainly given him ample opportunity to flex his talent across its spectrum, and Hendry should be primed for a position that offers more, particularly when it comes to a potential first-time main roster championship reign.
A former NXT Champion, very much like McDonagh, Hendry should be elevated to the point where a main roster title is within his grasp, having the level of charisma and in-ring ability that some would envy.
The end of Judgment Day is coming?
Perhaps there’s a future in Hendry and McDonagh both taking a serious (in terms of longevity and creative) stab at the Intercontinental Championship, ideally without the baggage of Judgment Day.
In a recent appearance on Six Feet Under, Liv Morgan indicated that Judgment Day wasn’t what it once was, declaring:
“I feel we’re a little bit stagnant right now, but I’m happy.”
The comments were made before the star recaptured the Women’s World Championship, with Dominik Mysterio also noting the faction’s struggles.
Perhaps it’s time to sunset the faction, with each member going their separate ways, vying for WWE championships across brands.
