Over a six-decade career spanning stage, film, television and voice work, Tim Curry played an extraordinary range of characters. He helped transform The Rocky Horror Picture Show into a participatory cultural phenomenon and brought theatricality, humor and menace to countless villains and misfits.

Through photos from his life and notable roles, look back at some of the performances that made Curry—who died August 25, 2026, at age 80—a pop culture fixture.

    Woof, ‘Hair’ (1968)

Curry’s first major stage role was in the 1968 London production of the counterculture musical“Hair”. With its antiwar politics, sexual frankness and experimental style, the show challenged conventions of musical theater. Curry played Woof, a member of the musical’s free-spirited “tribe.”

The London opening was deliberately timed to follow the passage of the Theatres of Act 1968, which abolished theatrical censorship in England and allowed the production to include nudity and profanity.

The play also connected Curry with Richard O’Brien, who would later create “The Rocky Horror Show.”

Dr. Frank-N-Furter, ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ (1973)

Before he became a film star, Curry originated his signature role in the first production of “The Rocky Horror Show” at London’s Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in 1973.

Created by Richard O’Brien, the musical drew on science fiction B-movies, Frankenstein, glam rock and British burlesque. It was also a deliberately provocative story about sexual freedom and self-discovery.

Curry’s Frank-N-Furter—a flamboyant, sexually liberated scientist—defied social conventions. The production’s success laid the foundation for the 1975 film.

Dr. Frank-N-Furter, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ (1975)

Curry reprised his stage role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter for the film adaptation, joining an ensemble that included Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O’Brien, Patricia Quinn, Little Nell and Meat Loaf.

Although the movie initially struggled at the box office, midnight screenings transformed it into a cultural institution, with fans dressing as the characters, shouting callbacks, throwing props and performing alongside the movie. That participatory tradition helped create the modern cult-film phenomenon.

Often recognized as the longest-running theatrical release in film history, The Rocky Horror Picture Show remains Curry’s defining film and one of the most enduring movies in popular culture.

The Native America Trail That Became Broadway

Long before it became synonymous with theater, Broadway was a 13-mile trail used by Indigenous tribes for hunting, trade and travel.

    Mozart, ‘Amadeus’ (1980)

Peter Shaffer’s “Amadeus” premiered in London in 1979 before moving to Broadway, where Curry played the titular role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The play dramatized the musician’s relationship with fellow composer Antonio Salieri as a bitter rivalry. However, much of that conflict was fictionalized. There is little evidence that Salieri despised Mozart or sabotaged his career.

For Curry, the role demonstrated that he could command the stage in a serious historical drama. His performance earned him his first Tony nomination and helped broaden his reputation beyond Dr. Frank-N-Furter, establishing him as a versatile theatrical actor.

    Pennywise, ‘It’ (1990)

Curry’s performance as Pennywise helped redefine the evil clown in popular culture and made ABC’s television adaptation of Stephen King’s novel IT a formative horror experience for an entire generation.

At a time when network television placed more limits on graphic violence, Curry relied on his facial expressions, voice and sudden shifts between humor and menace to make Pennywise terrifying.

    Various Voice Roles

Curry’s voice became one of his most versatile performance tools.

He earned a Daytime Emmy in 1991 for playing Captain Hook in the animated series Peter Pan and the Pirates. Other voice roles included the villain Hexxus in FernGully: The Last Rainforest, exuberant father Nigel Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys and the imposing Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

    King Arthur, ‘Spamalot’ (2005)

Curry returned to Broadway in 2005 as King Arthur in “Spamalot,” a musical adaptation of the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The show parodies the grand traditions of Arthurian legend while satirizing Broadway musicals themselves.

Curry’s physical comedy helped translate the absurdist humor of Monty Python, a British comedy troupe known for its irreverent satire, from the screen to the stage for a new Broadway audience. The performance earned him his third Tony Award nomination.
