This Rare He-Man Toy From The ’80s Has Sold For $7,500

The 1980s were a time of capitalism gone wild, right down to the youngest consumers. Thanks in part to loosened restrictions on advertising toward children, entire TV shows were built around selling toys during the decade. As many an ’80s child doesn’t have to be told, one of the most successful of these franchises was Mattel’s “Masters of the Universe”, often simply referred to by its main character’s name, He-Man.

Not all of the merchandise from this show is among the vintage toys now worth a fortune in the 2020s, but if you happen to have a Wonder Bread He-Man action figure, you can embrace the 1980s business spirit and potentially sell it for thousands. Also known as Savage He-Man, this unique rendition can be worth serious money. In June 2025, an AFA 80 prototype first shot closely associated with the rare figure sold through Heritage Auctions for a whopping $7,500.

Before you get too excited, that $7,500 sale isn’t representative of what a typical loose Wonder Bread He-Man will bring. An even more exceptional example has sold for considerably more: Heritage Auctions sold what it described as the only known factory-sealed Savage He-Man with its original mailer for $19,375 in August 2025. As of September 2026, the highest amount this He-Man’s shown to have sold for on eBay is $3,050 (in a July 2026 sale). Other sales from 2026 show the figurine selling for between $1,000 and just over $2,300, and those are all for ones in good condition, many of which also come with accessories.

Wonder Bread actually has nothing to do with this He-Man figure

While a major bread brand and Mattel creating an action figure together doesn’t seem far-fetched for the 1980s, Wonder Bread He-Man’s origins are nothing of the sort. Instead, the name appears to be simply what collectors have taken to calling the rare action figure. Per Vintage Toy Emporium, the confusion may stem from the fact that Wonder Bread and Mattel actually did do a promo together in 1986, but this featured Masters of the Universe trading cards, not action figures.

Another long-running theory claims the figure’s darker, more rugged appearance originated with Mattel’s early involvement with “Conan the Barbarian.” Interestingly, Conan Properties, Inc. did unsuccessfully file suit against Mattel over He-Man (decided in 1989), but that doesn’t establish that this particular figure originated as a Conan toy. Regardless, Mattel’s own website states that this He-Man was a special release, and YouTube channel Spector Creative uncovered evidence showing the toy was part of a “buy three, get one free” promotion run by the company in the early ’80s. This is also reflected by collector sales-tracking site Action Figure 411, which identifies it as a mail-in Special Edition He-Man rather than a retail release. The website’s sales history shows an average sale price of $1,368.40 across seven tracked eBay auctions between August and September 2026.

A 21st-century re-release of the sought-after toy is nowhere near as valuable

Here comes the part no person with Wonder Bread He-Man probably wants to hear: your Wonder Bread He-Man may not be worth anywhere near thousands of dollars, much less $100. That’s because Mattel released modern versions inspired by the figure in 2010 and 2022, naming it Wun-dar in perhaps a clever retconning of the fan name. Although some toys from the early 2000s are now worth a lot, the 2010s and 2020s aren’t vintage enough yet. The 2022 Wun-Dar originally sold for $17, and while it’s sold out through Mattel as of 2026, some can still be found on eBay and Amazon for around $40.

So, how can you tell if yours is the real deal and actually worth big bucks? Just like certain old dolls worth a ton, the difference is often in the finer details. Look closely at the toy’s back, and the original appears to have “Made in Taiwan” on it with the year 1981, while newer versions appear to have been made in China. Accessories can provide additional clues, although they’re not necessarily definitive because the original mail-in figure appears to have shipped with a varying assortment of bonus weapons. Photos of the original also show that He-Man had flesh-colored bracers. AThe modern Wun-Dar figures are easier to identify by their updated designs and accessories, including a black chest piece with a ‘W’ on it and weapons that distinguish them from the vintage mail-in figure. The 2010 Wun-Dar even came with a tiny loaf of plastic bread as a nod to the long-running Wonder Bread legend.
