‘This Isn’t Blackface’: Michelle Phan’s Sister’s ‘Avatar’ Makeup Sparks Racism Debate as Defenders Call It ‘Avatar’ Cosplay

Christine Phan’s Halloween portrayal of Neytiri from Avatar has started a discussion what is considered blackface or fictional-character cosplay
    @thechristinep/Instagram

Christine Phan, the sister of beauty influencer Michelle Phan, has sparked an online debate over her Halloween costume inspired by Neytiri from James Cameron’s Avatar. Critics questioned the dark facial makeup, while defenders argued the look recreates a fictional blue-skinned alien character.

The controversy emerged after a photograph of Christine in the costume circulated on Reddit. The image showed her wearing a Neytiri-inspired outfit, complete with elaborate braids and theatrical face makeup. Phan posed against a red-carpet-style backdrop with neon Halloween decorations.

The discussion quickly shifted towards whether the makeup crossed the line into blackface. Some users argued that the dark paint and red detailing around the lower half of her face recalled racist caricatures. Others questioned why a fictional alien character was being treated as a racial representation.

The original Reddit post accused Christine of wearing blackface, but several commenters challenged that description, arguing that the costume was intended to recreate a character from the science-fiction franchise rather than imitate a Black person.

The original poster captioned the post, saying, ‘I feel like this is the final final nail in the coffin for Michelle and her family. The last I’ve heard of Michelle Phan she’s been promoting AI and teaching and encouraging people to make content with AI. Last I heard of Promise she’s an anti vaxxer.’

    Avatar Costume Sparked Controversy

Neytiri is the Na’vi warrior portrayed by Zoe Saldaña in the Avatar films. The character belongs to a fictional humanoid species from Pandora, a distant moon in the franchise. The Na’vi are recognisable for their blue skin, feline features, pointed ears and distinctive markings.

According to the official Avatar character profile, Neytiri is a Na’vi and one of Pandora’s most skilled warriors. Her appearance features blue skin, darker markings, and elaborate braided hair. Christine’s interpretation prompted questions about the decision to use dark facial paint rather than more closely reproducing the character’s familiar blue complexion and markings.

Some Reddit users argued that the costume’s facial details, particularly the dark colouring and red area around the mouth, resembled historical blackface imagery. Others maintained that the makeup was part of a fictional-character transformation and should not automatically be interpreted as a racial caricature.

    The Internet Defends Christine Phan

Several commenters rejected the accusation. They argued that Neytiri is neither Black nor human. They emphasised that Christine was recreating an established fictional character.

One user questioned whether portraying an animated or computer-generated alien character could reasonably be classified as blackface when the character does not belong to a human racial group. Another commenter argued that dark paint alone does not automatically constitute blackface, pointing to the distinction between theatrical character makeup and historical racial caricature.

Others said the costume should be assessed in its entirety, including its resemblance to Neytiri and the character’s distinctive appearance. Some commenters maintained that the character reference did not automatically remove the makeup’s historical associations.

One criticism focused on the combination of dark facial colouring, the red detailing around the mouth and the hairstyle. Those users argued that even if Christine intended to portray Neytiri, the finished look could still evoke offensive imagery.

    Avatar Cosplay vs Blackface

Blackface has a specific historical context involving performers darkening their skin to portray Black people through racist theatrical caricatures. The practice is associated with minstrel shows, which used exaggerated physical features and stereotypes to ridicule Black communities.

Cosplay, meanwhile, involves recreating fictional characters through costumes, makeup and accessories. The two practices are not automatically interchangeable, although character recreations can still raise questions about racial representation and cultural sensitivity.

Defenders maintained that the costume was an attempt to recreate a character rather than imitate Black people. On the other hand, critics questioned whether the specific makeup choices could evoke racist imagery regardless of the intended character.

    Reddit Moderators Lock Discussion

The discussion eventually attracted enough rule-breaking comments that moderators locked the post. A moderator explained that the decision was made because of comments that violated the community’s rules, while acknowledging that the thread contained informative contributions.

The debate prompted some users to separate the controversy from unrelated criticism of Michelle Phan and other members of her family. Commenters argued that Christine’s costume should not automatically make her sister responsible for her actions. Neither Michelle Phan nor Christine’s personal explanation of the costume was provided in the Reddit discussion.
