Marvel collectibles come in many shapes and sizes, but even mass-produced toys can end up becoming an ultimate collectible with a little help from the people who made the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the biggest franchise of all time. Iron Man fans will probably already own a variety of replicas of Tony Stark’s iconic Iron Man helmets and suits, whether that is in six-inch form or a full-scale wearable version, but a new lot in Heritage Auction’s November Hollywood Showcase Auction includes a version that is pretty unique despite it starting out as just a regular store-bought piece that cost less than $100. The thing that makes it stand out is that this Marvel Legends Iron Man Helmet is adorned with several cast signatures, and the sign-off from the man who was there when it all began; Stan Lee.
The Marvel Legends range has brought many items from the MCU to shelves of collectors around the world for a fairly reasonable price. Similar to their Star Wars Legends range, this has included the helmets and weapons of many of Marvel’s finest, along with items like the Tesseract, all in full life-sized form to allow anyone to become their favorite Marvel hero or villain. The Iron Man helmet is unsurprisingly one of the most popular pieces in the range, being a hard plastic replication of Stark’s headpiece including LED wiring and metallic paint finish that makes it look pretty convincing from a short distance away. While that item has been produced in its thousands, there are not many in the world exactly like the one up for auction, which bears the signatures of Lee along with Paul Rudd, Karen Gillan, Paul Bettany, and Samuel L. Jackson. Probably the one disappointment is that is doesn’t include the signature of Robert Downey Jr. but you can’t have everything.
Could Iron Man Return to the MCU?
Marvel fans love nothing more than looking back on the glory of MCU past, but what about the future? Since Downey Jr. first donned the classic red and gold Iron Man suit in 2008, the MCU has expanded in ways that seemed impossible when Marvel Comics were forced to sell rights to various studios and tie their characters up in rights issues that have not completely been resolved decades later. However, with many of their characters now back in the Disney family, the future is all about the end of the multiverse and what comes after it. Avengers: Doomsday will be released in cinemas this December and will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars a year later, but after the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers is there a chance that we will see Downey Jr. getting back into his Iron Man suit one more time?
Of course, Marvel Studios been very vocal about the actor’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom – or at least one version of the iconic villain – but there have also been plenty of rumors that Secret Wars could see Downey Jr. go double time and give audiences the Iron Man vs Doctor Doom showdown that just a few years ago was never on the cards. While there are plenty of people who have complained the return of both Evans and Downey Jr. has “undone” their character’s Endgame conclusions, others have countered with the argument that this kind of thing is what Marvel Comics has been doing for decades with each character getting multiple new origin stories, retcons and reboots since their debuts. With only a couple of months until Avengers: Doomsday hits cinemas, the Marvel hype machine is coming roaring back to life and that could even have an impact on the sale price of items like the Iron Man helmet up for sale right now.
Do you own Marvel Legends’ Iron Man helmet? Do you think Robert Downey Jr. will return as the character one final time? Let us know in the comments.
