The final weekend of the 2026 regular season is here, and there’s still so much to be decided.
There remain two open playoff spots. Of the 10 teams that have clinched, just five are officially seeded. None of the postseason matchups for the Wild Card Series are set, either.

So, ahead of a frenzied final weekend, let’s break down what’s at stake. Here’s a look at the series with the most implications this weekend, beginning with two division races.
2 AL division titles are on the line
Cleveland is postseason bound thanks to a crisp 1-0 win over the Red Sox on Thursday, but there’s still plenty of work to do. The Guardians (83-76) have the inside track to their fourth AL Central title in the past five years, with a one-game lead over the White Sox (82-77). The club is 21-10 since Aug. 21, and no other team has more wins in that span. This is simply what Cleveland does. Of note, the AL Central champion — whether the Guardians or the White Sox — will also have a first-round bye, which adds to the allure of a division crown.
Chicago punched its ticket to the postseason on Thursday, becoming the first team to make the playoffs after losing 100-plus games in at least two consecutive seasons. But can the White Sox rally for the division title? They’ve spent 96 days in first place this season (including off days) and hold the all-important tiebreaker over the Guardians, by virtue of a 7-6 record in head-to-head meetings this season.
Someone has to win the AL West. Why not the Rangers? After both Houston and Texas took home wins on Thursday, the clubs remain tied by record at 79-80, and due to the Astros’ tiebreaker advantage, the pressure’s on the Rangers. Friday’s series opener with the Twins pits a pair of aces against one another, with Jacob deGrom toeing the rubber opposite All-Star righty Joe Ryan. The Rangers are vying for their first postseason appearance since winning the World Series in 2023.
The Astros have won seven of the last nine AL West titles, and, rather improbably, they’re still alive for the division crown in 2026 despite a 79-80 record. Houston, as mentioned, remains tied with Texas atop the standings, and the Astros have the tiebreaker over Texas thanks to a 9-4 record in head-to-head matchups. On paper, the A’s (63-96) are not exactly the strongest opponent, but they did take a series from the Astros in August, which culminated in Houston parting ways with GM Dana Brown.
Sorting through the NL Wild Card picture
Chicago is postseason-bound following a 2-1 win over the Marlins on Thursday that also saw Pete Crow-Armstrong become the seventh player in MLB history to join the 40-40 Club. But might that have been the last game at Wrigley Field this year? The Cubs remain a game behind the Padres in the Wild Card standings with home field advantage hanging in the balance. To complicate matters, the three-game series in Boston will be heavily affected by a Nor’easter that has already forced the two clubs to reschedule Sunday’s game as a part of a doubleheader on Friday. (One more win would also secure the No. 5 seed in the AL for the Red Sox, a matter not quite settled between them and whoever finishes second in the AL Central.)
Everything is settled for the Rays, who will enter the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the American League. Things are not nearly as neat and tidy for the Phillies, whose magic number to clinch a postseason is stuck at one following consecutive losses to the Brewers. Philadelphia is just two games up on the D-backs for the final NL Wild Card spot, and the club has lost ground on the Padres and Cubs for seeding, entering Friday trailing the former by two games and the latter by one. All-Star lefty Cristopher Sánchez will take the ball in the all-important series opener on Friday.
We’ve had this series circled on our calendar for a while, with the two NL West foes both still playing meaningful baseball in the final days of the regular season. The D-backs are very much alive, sitting two games behind the Phillies for the third and final NL Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, San Diego is surging at the perfect time, and having officially clinched their playoff spot on Thursday suddenly also finds itself in a position to host the Wild Card Series as the No. 4 seed.
