The Skim: The Evolution Of The Online Fandom

STELLAR PROMOTION: We’ve come a long way since fanfic.net

The Skim is back for another episode of pop culture chat – and this week, we’re delving deep into the world of fandoms and, of course, fangirls.

Hosts Bronwyn and Jade are no strangers to the fangirl world, having both grown up as active participants in the likes of the Jedward fandom, the Sherlock fandom, and whatever was trending on fanfic.net that week.

They discuss the ever-changing landscape of the fandom, how social media has changed the intensity of being a fan, and whether being a fangirl has become more about clout chasing than just… enjoying something.

Jade and Bronwyn also pay homage to the late, great Club Chalamet – a currently defunct fan page that dominated their Twitter DMs for years, and consider what age is too old to be waiting outside hotels for a celebrity.

Spoiler: probably any age over 17.

You can listen to the full episode here:

Brought to you by Hayu | This week on The Skim, Jade and Bronwyn are diving into the wild world of fandoms – from innocent teenage fangirling to the very online, occasionally unhinged culture we have today. We’re talking Heated Rivalry, Club Chalamet, celebrity relationships, clout-chasing and the fine line between being a fan and getting a little too invested. Plus, we look back at our own fandom eras and ask: has social media made being a fangirl better, or just more chaotic?
