    • Roblox is under investigation by Senators Hawley and Durbin for child safety practices, with allegations of prioritizing revenue over well-being.
    • Roblox faces over 140 federal lawsuits and state investigations for allegedly facilitating child sexual exploitation through its platform design.
    • Roblox has implemented new safety measures, including age-based account tiers and facial age checks, but critics question if these changes are sufficient to protect children.

With 140 million daily users and over 140 federal lawsuits, Roblox has become impossible for Congress to ignore. Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin formally launched an investigation into the platform’s child safety practices on August 13, 2026. The timing is pointed — Roblox is simultaneously rolling out its most significant safety overhaul to date. Think of it like a restaurant posting a glowing health score while inspectors are still in the kitchen. For any family with a child on Roblox, this investigation is directly about their account.

Revenue vs. Safety: What the Senate Is Actually Asking

Senators want documents — and they’ve already drawn their conclusions in the letter requesting them.

The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, led by Hawley (R-Mo.) and Durbin (D-Ill.), sent a formal letter to CEO David Baszucki demanding records on how Roblox handles child sexual abuse, bullying, and financial exploitation of minors — with a response deadline of August 31, 2026

    • The letter states directly that “Roblox appears to prioritize revenue and engagement metrics over the safety and well-being of our children.”

    • Roblox faces over 140 federal lawsuits alleging it knowingly facilitated child sexual exploitation through platform design.

    • State attorneys general in Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Florida have filed separate suits.

    • Roblox paid $23 million to Alabama and West Virginia to settle child safety investigations — without admitting wrongdoing

Lawmakers aren’t just targeting bad actors who found their way onto the platform. They’re questioning whether Roblox’s own architecture — its social features, in-game economy, and recommendation systems — makes children more vulnerable by design. Los Angeles County’s lawsuit accused the platform of making children “easy prey for pedophiles,”

“Roblox appears to prioritize revenue and engagement metrics over the safety and well-being of our children.” —Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin, August 2026.

What Roblox Is Actually Changing – and Whether It’s Enough

New account tiers and facial age checks are real changes — whether they’re sufficient is the fight ahead.

Roblox has restructured into three age-based account tiers:

    • Roblox Kids (ages 5–8) with no default chat

    • Roblox Select (ages 9–15) with graduated chat access

    • Standard accounts for users 16 and older

Age verification now requires either a government ID or facial age estimation. Roblox claims to be the first major gaming platform to mandate facial checks for chat access Parental controls extend to friends, screen time, and spending up to age 18 — features that only deliver on their promise if a parent actually configures them

Critics remain unconvinced. According to The Harm Report, lawsuits allege three persistent failures:

    • Safety systems that still allow adult contact with minors

    • Platform design that encourages compulsive spending by children

    • Alleged collection of biometric data without proper consent

Roblox chief safety officer Matt Kaufman described chat in Select accounts as being “gradually turned on” based on age — framed by Roblox as deliberate protection, and by regulators as plainly insufficient

Parents whose children use Roblox can verify which account tier their child is in and confirm that parental controls are active. Whether Roblox meets the Senate’s August 31 deadline will signal how seriously the company takes federal scrutiny. However this probe resolves, its reach extends well beyond one platform — other youth-oriented services are watching closely to see how much structural responsibility Congress ultimately demands.
