San Diego Comic-Con is always full of news that every comic book fan needs to know. Of course, the biggest announcements often come from Marvel Studios in Hall H regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and there were plenty of those), but there are plenty of announcements from the creative teams behind the biggest comic book companies.
For example, DC Comics announced that Vixen is getting her first ongoing series, and it will be written by the great Stephanie Williams. Marvel Comicsalso revealed some upcoming titles with amazing creative teams. And with that in mind, let’s start with the one that should have people talking as soon as it debuts.
Predator Vs. Punisher
Frank Castle is known for being one of the best killers in all of comics. He can be loud or stealthy, improvises better than most, and has fought and defeated both alien and Earthly beings with superpowers. The Yautja (a.k.a. the Predators) can go to war with an entire group of trained killers on their own and win. However, they’ve never faced the one-man army of the Punisher.
The Predators have fought Wolverine, Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four, but this could be the fight that everyone has been waiting for, and the creative team for this particular story is perfect. Writer Frank Tieri (Wolverine and Deadpool) is joined by artist Jesús SaÃz (Eddie Brock: Carnage and Captain America) to create what I believe will be a bloody and brutal must-read series.
Venom
This is a bit of a spoiler for Queen in Black, but Eddie Brock and Venom will be one again. As someone who’s enjoyed MJ as Venom, it will be refreshing to see the classic duo together again. The question I have is how the symbiote leaves MJ without her dying.
Writer Charles Soule is back writing Eddie Brock after his amazing ten issues of Eddie Brock: Carnage. He’s joined by all-star artist Tommaso Bianchi (Daredevil/Punisher: The Devil’s Trigger), who will bring the ferociousness that the Lethal Protector deserves.Â
Mary Jane Watson
I don’t know what this is about but I’m ready. – because all I needed to know was that Ashley Allen (Magik and Moonstar) is writing it. Time and again she’s proven to be a terrific writer, and there’s no doubt she will bring more greatness to this series. And after everything MJ’s been through as Venom, she’ll likely have a more interesting perspective on life and what it means to be a hero.
Ashley Allen is joined by artist Phil Noto (Uncanny X-Force and Star Wars: Chewbacca). Together, they will make MJ look stunning and likely dangerous.Â
Indiana Jones
Indiana Jones is one of the characters and franchises that helped make the action movie genre profitable. For one, it showed that just because you can shoot a gun and crack a whip doesn’t mean that you can’t be smart and savvy. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that there wouldn’t be Tomb Raider or Uncharted games without him.
This isn’t the first time Indiana Jones has had a Marvel comic book. However, he’s never had someone like Jason Aaron (Wolverine and Absolute Superman) writing him, or Aaron Kuder doing the art (Daredevil and Planet She-Hulk). I hope this series is as dark as I expect it to be. And, hopefully, Indy punches some Nazis.
Maximum X-Men
Last, but certainly not least, are the X-Men. Whatever happens after Avengers: Armageddon leads to Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants “filling the void of the Avengers.” The X-Men have always been one of the if not the – best superhero teams in comic books, but something about the Maximum X-Men announcement leads me to think this will be something special.
” And their first challenge is a full-on invasion from the Negative Zone! Is this Annihilus again—or something far, far worse?”
Marvel Comics
Writer Christopher Yost (X-Force and Red Robin) and artist Tony S. Daniel (X-Force and Batman) will bring the team of Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, Firestar, and Justice together. And what are the X-Men doing on their first mission? They’re taking a trip to the Negative Zone. Stay tuned toBam Smack Pow to see who they fight and why.
