It will soon be the end of an era for the Nintendo Switch console, as it’s confirmed that it will be killed for good in 2027
They say “all good things must come to an end”, and for the most part, that statement is true, especially when it concerns the ever-evolving video game industry. After all, a new console generation tends to arrive every five to eight years or so, and Nintendo is no exception
The Nintendo Switch first launched in March 2017, and in typical Nintendo fashion, we’ve seen various iterations of the hybrid console, including the original, Lite and OLED models. What’s more, having shifted over a reported 156 million units and with two more years in the bank, it will likely shift a few more
However, with the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, it wouldn’t be long until the writing was on the wall for the 2017 machine, and as it’s been confirmed that the OG’s lifespan is coming to an end next year

When is production for the Nintendo Switch ending?
Nintendo has confirmed that as of mid-February 2027, it will no longer be producing Switch consoles, and that includes all models since 2017
In an official website post, it only mentions that retailers in Europe will have no new Nintendo Switch consoles to sell, but that will most likely roll out to other regions shortly after
“From mid-February 2027, almost ten years after Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, Nintendo will no longer sell to retailers hardware in the Nintendo Switch family of systems – specifically Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model. Sales of Nintendo Switch hardware on Nintendo Store will also end in mid-February 2027,” reads a section in an FAQ
It also mentions, however, that the current Nintendo Switch consoles will still be produced in 2026 and “should be widely available in Europe all year”, but as of 2027, that will come to an end
Unfortunately, as concerning as this news might be for many gamers, the time had to come at some point. But to be fair, the Nintendo Switch has had a fantastic run that has lasted a decade, plus, gamers won’t be abandoning the system anytime soon
That being said, while it would be a natural progression to pick up a Nintendo Switch 2, with consoles continually becoming more expensive the older they get in this generation, it’s not so easy for everyone to simply buy the shiniest new toy
When the Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025, its RRP was £395.99/$449.99. However, on 1 September 2026, the console will receive a global price hike, expected to be an increase of around 6.4% to 17%, depending on the region. The lowest increase is in Europe, and the highest is in South Korea. The United States and Canada will increase by 11.1% and 7.9%, respectively
