HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” now an annual summer filming tradition throughout Albany, Troy, Schenectady and the rest of the region, will return for a fourth season Nov. 1.
The opulent, Emmy-nominated period drama from creator Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) announced season four with a 90-second trailer. The clip is packed with familiar faces in its star-studded cast – Carrie Coon, Audra McDonald, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga and more – and plenty of gilded barbs.
Per the season’s logline, the new season will see Bertha Russell (Coon) and her family contending with the consequences of her social climbing, including a deteriorating marriage, “as Agnes van Rhijn (Baranski) seizes an opportunity to regain her position. Meanwhile, Marian (Louisa Jacobson) forges a new path for herself, and Peggy (Benton) works to be accepted by her future in-laws. In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for.”
In an interview with Vanity Fair announcing the fourth season, director Salli Richardson-Whitfield promised a packed first episode.
“This season is about legacy and all of our characters really growing into their true selves, and finding themselves,” she said. “Even for Bertha, who seems to have it all, what does she really want out of life? Is it just money? Is it family? How do I have it both?”
The show’s third season proved its breakout, with Benton telling Vanity Fair, “‘I think our show has been a slow burn, and then all of a sudden became this huge pop-culture hit last year.”
“The Gilded Age” production has become a summer staple for the Capital Region, thanks to the large concentration of Victorian-era architecture. Neighborhoods transformed into cobblestone-lined playgrounds for the wealthy and power-hungry, and horses trotted among bustled actors. Season four began shooting locally in June, and the series dropped a teaser mid-production that same month.
The eight-episode season will debut at 9 p.m. on Nov. 1 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
