The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested Edward Frit, a 29-year-old resident of Alabama, after Epic reported that he had made death threats in a Fortnite voice chat. IGN reported this, citing court documents.
The man, who used the nickname WagesOfNinja, repeatedly spoke during the game of his desire to “kill someone” and claimed that he thought about it every day. Furthermore, he threatened to shoot law enforcement officers if they came to his home, and then to take his own life.
“Let’s see if the FBI is going to show up at my door because I’ll shoot them motherf****rs too” said Frit.
On 20 September, Epic handed over the account details, an audio recording of the chat, and a transcript of the conversations to the bureau; three days later, the player was arrested. The submission, characterized as a “voluntary emergency disclosure”, was received by the FBI’s National Threat Operations Section, as well as the EXTRACT crisis response team. The man has been formally charged with making threats via interstate communications. He has pleaded not guilty and will remain in custody until his trial begins.
In November 2023, Epic Games launched a new system in Fortnite to report rule violations in voice chat, allowing players to record a snippet of audio and submit a complaint anonymously. The system then records the last five minutes of communication, after which it sends the audio file to the moderation team. Penalties depend on the content of the messages – ranging from a ban to, as in Frit’s case, referral to the police.
“The only way Epic ever receives a copy of the audio clip is if voice reporting is on and a participant affirmatively reports the voice chat using the in-game voice reporting feature,” the company stated.
In addition, Fortnite players can report violationsses automated systems to detect harmful content, including messages relating to self-harm, threats to children’s safety and threats of real-world violence
