The Cyberpunk Anime Every Sci-Fi Fan Should See Needs Saving

Serial Experiments Lain belongs alongside Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Giant Freakin Anime makes the case for saving this cyberpunk classic.

Saying you’re an anime fan usually requires a few qualifiers. Anime covers a huge selection of genres and subgenres, from classic shonen adventures to slice-of-life stories, romance, and Junji Ito’s nightmare-inducing horror.

For anime fans who love cyberpunk, the conversation usually starts with Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Akira. But there’s one more that belongs on that list: Serial Experiments Lain. It should be required viewing for all sci-fi fans, not just anime fans.

One of the best cyberpunk stories ever told deserves to be widely available, not left behind as the way we watch anime changes. We’re not going to stand for that. Any anime this good should be easy for everyone to discover, and Giant Freakin Anime is making the case for saving Serial Experiments Lain.
