Welcome back to The Beat Digest, a twice-weekly round-up of the biggest comics-related news stories we’ve missed every Tuesday and Friday. Is there a story out there you think we should cover? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
§ The first five mins of Lanterns were released ahead of the show’s premiere on HBO on Sunday, August 16. An official, behind-the-scenes podcast, hosted by movie-centric TikToker Juju Green (aka Straw Hat Goofy), was also confirmed. The weekly video discussion, featuring cast and crew from the series, will launch after the first episode drops.
Speaking of Lanterns, co-creator Tom King revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Nathan Fillion will reprise the role of Guy Gardner on the animated Mister Miracle series. He is the first actor confirmed for the show, based on the comic King created with Mitch Gerads. Fillion, 55, played the Green Lantern in Superman and on Peacemaker, and will also return to the part in Lanterns and Man of Tomorrow. Mister Miracle does not have a confirmed platform or ETA yet.
§ Entertainment Weekly also shared Troy Baker is playing Nathaniel Essex in Insomniac’s Wolverine. The veteran video game actor’s likeness was spotted in the game’s story trailer, but his role went unconfirmed until now. His version of the future Mr. Sinister is being portrayed as the leader of Logan, Sabretooth, and Mystique’s group Team X. Additionally, the outlet revealed Kelly Hu, who played Lady Deathstrike in X2, is playing Tyger Tiger, a Madripoorian crime lord, and proprietor of the Princess Bar. The game will arrive exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on September 15.
§ Via Variety, Rosario Dawson revealed at GalaxyCon that she reprised the role of Claire Temple (aka Night Nurse) for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but the scene was cut from the final film. She comments that despite her disappointment, she still hopes to reappear as the character someday. Dawson, 47, played Claire on all the Marvel Netflix shows (except The Punisher) from 2015 to 2018, but will return to TV screens on Ahsoka season two, instead of Daredevil: Born Again season three, when both premiere on Disney+ next year.
§ Via a press release, Titan Comics revealed Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus: Die With Honor, the third volume in the series. Writer Nancy A. Collins and artist Mariano Taibo, who teamed up on the second volume, To Lose is to Win, earlier this year, will reunite on the series, which sees things get even more complicated for Alura, Stix, and Mead, with the former two planning a mission to kill Madame Nomura. Issue #1 (of 4) will be released on November 4, shortly before the Prime Video show Blade Runner 2099 drops on Nov. 25. All four issues of To Lose is to Win are available now.
§ Simon & Schuster imprint Gallery Books will releaseBehind the Castle Walls, a memoir by former Disney CEO Bob Chapek, on September 29, 2026. Written with Don Yaeger, the book will cover Chapek’s whole life, including his start at Disney in 1993, and the two years he spent as CEO from 2020 to 2022, before being abruptly replaced by his predecessor Bob Iger. Billed as a “story of ambition, power, and the price of Disney magic,” it will see him publicly comment on his ouster for the first time, and reflect on whether he was merely a “scapegoat” for the company’s troubles during the COVID-19 pandemic or not.
§ The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Marvel Studios was fined $160,000 by the San Diego City Council, for covering the downtown Gaslamp Quarter’s archway with an advertisement for Avengers: Doomsday during Comic-Con. A total of $48,500 in fines was also issued for other advertisements wrapped on hotels and buildings during the convention. These fines are de rigueur during SDCC, as the city has laws against outdoor advertising, but the Union-Tribune says “there did appear to be more of an effort to make sure every building wrap got a fine” this year, something that may or may not have to do with a current budget crisis.
§ Finally, British actress Lucy Davisannounced on Instagram that she has terminal stage 4 breast cancer. The 53-year old was diagnosed 18 months ago, but decided to publicly share the news after the disease metastasized to her bones. Davis is best-known for playing Dawn on the original version of The Office (2001-03), Dianne in Shaun of the Dead (2004), Etta Candy in Wonder Woman (2017), and Aunt Hilda on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-20). Her Sabrina co-stars Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Ottowere among those who sent messages of support, with the latter writing, “Lucy, I love you. You are transcendent in all things. See you very soon.”
