Back in 2022, audiences were introduced to a new, twisted iteration of Gotham City courtesy of Matt Reeves’ The Batman. While we’ve seen the Caped Crusaderjump into action on the big screen before, Robert Pattinson’s portrayal quickly became a fan favorite and has since been considered one of the best renditions of the character in live-action. As a result, there has been a lot of anticipation for the next entry in the saga for quite some time now, and yet a sequel still eludes us almost half a decade later.

While The Penguin HBO miniseries expanded on the world Matt Reeves created, the Dark Knight himself has remained in the shadows for a little longer than usual. The Batman Part II was initially intended to be released in October 2025 before being delayed back to October 2, 2026, and then pushed back once more to Oct. 1, 2027. Fans believed that there were no more unexpected surprises in store, as five years in between movies was already a lot. Unfortunately, that was far from the case

The Batman Part II has been officially delayed to Feb. 18, 2028

We have a good-news, bad-news scenario here. On the bright side, director Matt Reeves has revealed the very first teaser for The Batman Part II. It’s a short video with no groundbreaking reveals, but at least we’re able to see the Caped Crusader once more (against a snowy background, this time around). The downside? The teaser concludes with a new release date: Feb. 18, 2028

The delay itself isn’t huge, as audiences will have to wait for months longer than originally expected. Furthermore, given that production on The Batman Part II has finally begun, it’s unlikely the film will be pushed back even further. However, what makes this announcement all the more disappointing is that over six years will have gone by between the first entry in the franchise and its direct sequel. To top things off, this will mark the third time the movie has been delayed

Who knew we’d get to play GTA VI before watching The Batman Part II?

An official reason for the delay hasn’t been revealed just yet. While it is likely that Matt Reeves just needs more time to bring his grand vision to life, fans are also theorizing that this could be tied to DC’s bigger plans for its cinematic universe. After all, The Batman is an Elseworlds production, which means Robert Pattinson’s take on the character is different from the Batman who will take over the mainline DC Universe, right next to David Corenswet’s Superman

The DCU’s version of the Caped Crusader hasn’t been introduced just yet, but we know that a movie with him and Robin in the lead, titled The Brave and the Bold, is set to come our way. This is just speculation on our end, but perhaps Supergirl’s box-office failure could’ve changed the original plans for the DCU, and now the studio is fast-tracking projects that will be a guaranteed success, such as Batman’s solo movie

Audiences will witness two different versions of Batman on the big screen, but don’t expect their respective movies to be released around the same period. After all, DC wouldn’t want to compete with itself at the box office. With that in mind, there is a chance that The Brave and the Bold could be released as early as late 2027, explaining why The Batman Part II was pushed back a few months to 2028. Then again, sometimes the easiest answer is the right one, and Matt Reeves could simply need the extra time to polish his upcoming film. Whatever the case, let’s just hope that this is the last delay we’ll have to deal with.

The Batman Part II will be released on Feb. 18, 2028
