The 1980s were a great decade for movie quotes.
Whether it was The Terminatortelling a police officer, “I’ll be back” or Gordon Gekko reminding us that “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good” in Wall Street, the decade provided its fair share of catchphrases.
In fact, 17 of the American Film Institute’s 100 Greatest Movie Quotes of All Time came during the ‘80s. None from the decade rank higher than “Go ahead, make my day” at No. 6.
The quote was made famous by 1983’s Sudden Impact, the fourth film in the series about “Dirty” Harry Callahan, an inspector with the San Francisco Police Department played by Clint Eastwood. Directed by Eastwood, Sudden Impactfinds Callahan falling for a woman out to kill the men who sexually assaulted her and her sister 10 years earlier.
The famous catchphrase is heard toward the beginning of the movie, when Callahan says it to a man holding a waitress at gunpoint inside his favorite diner.
Charles B. Pierce, who received a story credit for Sudden Impact, attributed the line’s inspiration to his father, who once told him, “When I come home tonight and the yard has not been mowed, you’re gonna make my day,” according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas.

Sudden Impact made more than $67 million domestically, making it the highest grossing film in the series. And “Go ahead, make my day” become a permanent part of pop culture.
Eastwood drew upon the line’s popularity in 1986 when he successfully convinced voters in Carmel, Calif., to “Go ahead – make me mayor.” And Madonna used a variation of the catchphrase in her 1986 song “White Heat.”
President Ronald Reagan even borrowed it in 1985 while speaking at the American Business Conference.
“I have my veto pen drawn and ready for any tax increase that Congress might even think of sending up,” Reagan said. “And I have only one thing to say to the tax increasers: Go ahead, make my day.”
