Godzilla and nine wild horses walk into a bar, and it’s probably the AMC one. This weekend, there’s the release of new Godzilla and Martin McDonagh flicks, though neither is related to the other. There’s also Bill Hader as the new Cat in the Hat, though he doesn’t commit to Mike Myers’s uncanny live-action suit.
The Japanese Godzilla movies being rolled out parallel to the American Monsterverse makes for a fascinating contrast. This new one, a sequel to 2023’s Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, returns to postwar Japan and sics a new kaiju, King Ghidorah, on an exhausted population still not back on its feet
➽ We ranked all of the big guy’s movies from the last 50 years.
You know that trailer you haven’t been able to escape in theaters? Well, Wild Horse Nine is actually quite good. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell star as two friends in the CIA who decide to visit Easter Island for a bit. What comes of their trip is an abrasive, occasionally emotional and darkly comedic film from Martin McDonagh.
It’s been almost ten years since Lee Chang-dong’s excellent thriller Burning. Chang-dong’s latest is Possible Love, a drama exploring the romantic relationships between four strangers. Bilge Ebiri saw the film at Venice and called it “the most powerful, political, hypnotic film of his career.”
The first season appeared out of nowhere to remind us that creator Joe Barton (Giri/Haji) is pretty good at TV. The second reunites spy Helen (Keira Knightley), whose husband is becoming U.K. prime minister, and her assassin best friend, Sam (Ben Whishaw), who keeps trying to get out of the game. Before long, Helen, Sam, and their various motley-crew colleagues and frenemies are drawn into a sprawling mystery
One of the silver linings of a shrinking slate of TV offerings in the past few years is that a fantastic show that might not otherwise have survived the tsunami of Peak TV can occasionally squeak through with a renewal. So now everyone gets more Tracy Morgan in one of the best comedies of this year and a true balm for every 30 Rockfan
HBO’s international lineup is a treasure trove of worthwhile shows. Now in its second season, this City of Godspinoff tracks the power struggle after the death of a drug lord and how the criminal-justice system, local politicians, and lawyers react to this opportunity to shake up the status quo. Matheus Nachtergaele, who starred in the original film, is back for this go-round
Anna Lambe is the breakout star playing Siaja, a young Inuk woman who realizes she’s unhappy in her marriage and wants more from her life. Siaja still doesn’t have it all figured out in season two, but the show’s growth as a sitcom continues apace, complete with goofy townspeople, a slow-burn romance, and as many at-work high jinks as you could want
Unfortunately, Bill Hader isn’t putting on the cat suit again. He’s just voicing the Cat in the Hat in this animated film that switches up the classic Dr. Seuss tale a bit. The Cat is dispatched by his boss (Giancarlo Esposito) to cheer up two kids who just moved to a new neighborhood. And for some reason, Thing 2 is missing.
The third Super Troopers is making its way to streaming. From comedy troupe Broken Lizard, Thorny, Farva, Rabbit, Mac, and Foster all get back together for a wedding that obviously goes wrong.
