Ted Danson will be roaming the streets of San Francisco for one final mystery.
The hit comedy series “A Man on the Inside” has begun filming its third season in the city, Netflix announced on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The Los Gatos-based streamer also confirmed Season 3 will be the show’s last.

The half-hour series, which features eight episodes per season, stars Danson as Charles Nieuwendyk, a widower and retired engineering professor who joins a private detective agency run by Julie Kovalenko (Lilah Richcreek Estrada).
Other regular cast members returning include Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Stephanie Beatriz, Eugene Cordero, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sally Struthers and Mary Steenburgen.
New cast members for Season 3 include Bernadette Peters, Nick Offerman, Annette O’Toole, Rachel Dratch, Stephen Root, Christopher McDonald, Diedrich Bader and Jessica St. Clair.
“This series began with a retiree taking a chance at a new life. By answering a help-wanted ad and venturing out into the world, Charles Nieuwendyk made his world bigger and proved that life only slows down if you let it,” series creator and showrunner Michael Schur said in a statement released by Netflix. “We are thrilled to be able to conclude his journey with one final chapter, as embodied by the great Ted Danson, who I am legally required to refer to as a ‘National Treasure.'”
While “A Man on the Inside” is set in San Francisco, most of the first two seasons were filmed in Los Angeles, with some exteriors shot in the Bay Area. Season 3, though, is to be mostly filmed in San Francisco, a development producer Morgan Sackett credits to the city’s more generous film incentive program, which Mayor Daniel Lurie signed into law in February.
“I believe this new film incentive will go a long way to restoring San Francisco as a filmmakers’ destination,” said Sackett in February.
In previewing Season 3, Sackett referred to Nathanial Rich’s book, “San Francisco Noir,” which highlights locations of classic films.
“‘The Man on the Inside’ is a detective show, and we’re going to pay homage to many of the scenes in this book,” Sackett added. “The chase scene in ‘Bullitt’ might take place at a little bit slower pace, because our detective is in his 70s.”
