Stranger Things fans, get ready to journey into the unknown once again! Netflix is officially expanding its wildly popular supernatural universe with a brand-new live-action spinoff series, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. Announced as part of the annual Stranger Things Day celebration on November 6, the upcoming series promises a fresh mystery, new heroes, terrifying villains, and plenty of the horror, wonder, and spectacle that fans have come to love.

Coming exclusively to Netflix in 2028, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure will take viewers back to the 1950s, making it a prequel set before the events of the original Stranger Things series and even before the acclaimed stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow. While details about the story are still being kept under wraps, the new series is expected to explore another fascinating chapter of the franchise’s mythology.
The Duffer Brothers are returning to help bring this new adventure to life alongside Kate Trefry, who will serve as co-creator, showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Trefry is no stranger to the Stranger Things universe, having worked on the original series since Season 2 and written the award-winning stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
Adding even more creative firepower to the project, BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning filmmaker Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, Darkest Hour) will direct the first three episodes. The announcement has the creative team just as excited as the fans. Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure has been a project they’ve dreamed about for years, describing the opportunity to finally bring it to life as both surreal and exhilarating. They also teased that the series will deliver the familiar Stranger Things DNA while introducing a completely fresh setting, characters, heroes, and villains.
And, naturally, the brothers couldn’t resist leaving fans with a little mystery of their own, wrapping up their announcement with the playful message: “Watch the skies, nerds!”

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the US and Canada, praised the passion of the show’s global fanbase and highlighted the opportunity to introduce audiences to a new dimension of this beloved universe.
Kate Trefry also shared her excitement about taking the franchise in a new direction, promising a story filled with the horror, wonder, and mystery that made the original series such a phenomenon. Executive producer Shawn Levy, representing 21Laps, added that the series will introduce an entirely new ensemble and adventure while retaining the emotional storytelling and larger-than-life mythology that have become synonymous with Stranger Things.
Since making its debut in 2016, Stranger Things has grown into one of Netflix’s biggest global entertainment phenomena. Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, the series has attracted more than 1.2 billion views across its first four seasons and earned over 70 awards worldwide, including Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
The franchise has also expanded well beyond the original television series, with the animated adventure Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, the Olivier and Tony Award-winning stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, books, merchandise, Halloween Horror Nights attractions, and immersive experiences at Netflix House.
Now, with Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, there’s another mysterious destination waiting to be explored.
