SteamOS Update Brings Major Steam Deck Redesign and Better Remote Play

The latest SteamOS update introduces a redesigned interface, improved streaming performance, and several long-awaited quality-of-life improvements.

SteamOS gets a major update that polishes the gaming platform with a revamped interface, improved Remote Play, easier installation of non-Steam games, and quality-of-life improvements. The update is available for Steam Deck and Steam Machine and improves the console-like experience while fixing long-standing usability concerns. Meanwhile, Fortnite compatibility on Linux could expand the platform’s multiplayer options.

SteamOS Introduces a Major UI Redesign

The latestSteamOS update introduces a major makeover of the Steam Deck interface, with a more console-like look and larger game artwork. Instead of using mostly tiny box art tiles, the new home page prominently features game artwork in the background, with posters organized across the lower section of the screen.

The new UI is cleaner and puts games front and center. The update also adds screen savers, letting users display cloud images or game artwork when their devices are idle. This makes for a more visually pleasing experience when you hook up a Steam Deck or Steam Machine to a television.

But hiding the game posters would make the backdrop art pop even more. The interface still has room for improvement, especially for those who want a cleaner living-room gaming experience.

Pyro Wave Improves Steam Deck Remote Play

Another big addition is Pyro Wave, a new Remote Play codec designed to improve streaming quality and reduce latency. Steam Deck owners with powerful Windows PCs can stream games to their Steam Deck for better graphics and smoother gameplay.

Network performance is a major factor in overall quality. A solid Wi-Fi connection (ideally backed up by a mesh network) can help deliver consistent results. Alternatively, you can connect the host PC directly to the router

Remote Play is still handy when the television is in use or other household members are using the main entertainment system. However, weak wireless coverage and physical barriers can limit its effectiveness.

SteamOS Fixes Non-Steam Game Installation Problems

SteamOS now fixes a long-standing headache for Windows game installers. Previously, users had to manually turn on Proton in compatibility options after adding an installer as a non-Steam game. If you skip this step, your installs may not work properly, which can confuse newcomers. This update makes the process easier, so you can install older PC games like Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005).

Other enhancements include lower CPU utilization, making the built-in game recording more useful. Previously, recording could drop performance to about 10fps in some cases. Occasional frame dips still happen, but it’s a much more usable experience now. The update also provides account notifications, a dedicated account-switching page, and calendar recommendations with two new games every day.

    Fortnite Could Finally Reach SteamOS

Another big piece of news is the possibility of Linux support for Fortnite. Some multiplayer games really work on the Steam Deck because Epic Games Easy Anti-Cheat already supports Linux. But for the traditional Linux gaming experience, Fortnite has been absent because of compatibility restrictions.

Recent developments show that Epic Games are working on Linux compatibility for Easy Anti-Cheat, which could pave the way for Fortnite on Linux-based devices. However, Linux support doesn’t mean Steam Deck or Steam Machine support is coming soon. Epic Games has said further SteamOS support might be coming down the line, but players will have to wait for confirmation.

Epic Games Faces Questions Over Its Strategy

Epic Games has its own storefront to compete with Steam, but getting people to come to it has been a challenge. The free-game offer has led consumers to claim titles, but it hasn’t necessarily convinced them to make the Epic Games Store their preferred gaming platform.

The company also released a faster launcher, built with AI-assisted coding. Then Steam released an update that improved its launch speed, refocusing attention on overall product quality. For SteamOS users, reliable compatibility matters more than aggressive marketing. Continuing that, it improved its x, while some SteamOS features are delayed, leaving players waiting for the full experience they seek.

    SteamOS Continues Improving PC Gaming

The new SteamOS version feels more comfortable, with a new UI, smoother Remote Play, easier installation, and better recording performance. Adding Fortnite support could make it much more appealing, especially for multiplayer fans.

As Valve keeps polishing its platform, SteamOS is gradually becoming an attractive alternative for gamers who want the flexibility of PC gaming with the convenience of a console.
