Valve launched the Steam Frame VR headset at USD 1,059, targeting gamers seeking wireless PC and standalone VR experiences. The headset debuted on September 14 across major markets, with reservations opening before purchases begin. Valve offers 256GB and 1TB versions at USD 1,059 and USD 1,299 in the United States.
The company designed Steam Frame to stream demanding Steam games wirelessly or run compatible titles directly. Its launch arrives after memory costs pushed Valve to delay some of its hardware. The pricing now places Steam Frame well above mainstream options such as Meta Quest 3.
The VR headset
runs SteamOS on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor with 16GB of LPDDR5X memory. Valve combines wireless PC streaming with standalone gaming through the headset’s mobile hardware. The headset features dual LCDs with 2160×2160 resolution per eye and refresh rates reaching 144Hz.
Eye tracking supports foveated rendering, which focuses processing power where the player looks. Inside-out tracking removes the need for external base stations, while pancake lenses support a balanced design. The headset weighs about 440 grams with its strap and includes wireless VR controllers.
Valve also positions Steam Frame as a device for traditional games beyond virtual reality. Players can access flat games through a virtual display or use standard gamepads. Wireless streaming can connect the headset with a gaming PC for demanding VR titles.
The approach gives Steam Frame a broader role than a conventional standalone VR headset
. However, the premium pricing creates a major hurdle against cheaper Quest alternatives.
Half-Life: Alyx also adds an unusual twist to the launch story. Valve has confirmed a standalone version for Steam Frame, but the game will arrive after launch. The company says the highly anticipated VR title is coming ‘soon’ to the headset. The native version uses eye tracking and foveated rendering to run directly on the Snapdragon chip.
Valve includes the game with Steam Frame, although the voucher will arrive after launch. The package also includes controllers, while the USD 29 power supply costs extra. Optional ergonomic and replacement kits add another USD 59 and USD 49 respectively.
Reservations remain open until September 17, followed by randomized purchase invitations from September 18. Valve’s “Steam Frame is here!” announcement signals a broader push toward a connected Steam gaming ecosystem.
The strategy could strengthen Valve’s hardware presence, despite the headset’s premium entry point. Steam Frame therefore looks more like an enthusiast product than a mainstream VR breakthrough.
