Square Enix hasn’t announced Octopath Traveler 3, but it’s now all but confirmed that the RPG will release at some point.
Believe it or not, Octopath Traveler has almost been around for a decade now. The first game launched at the start of the Nintendo Switch generation in 2018. There’s also been Octopath Traveler 2, Octopath Traveler 0, and Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent.
Dengeki recently asked the developers of the franchise about challenges the team would like to take on in the future. That led Square Enix’s Tomoya Asano to bring up Octopath Traveler 3, and how expectations are high for the game. However, he wasn’t able to say anything further.
Asano, Masashi Takahashi, and Hiroto Suzuki said the following :
Asano: HD-2D, which was born with Octopath Traveler, has gained recognition over the past eight years, and I feel that it has spread considerably now.
Octopath Traveler has also reached its eighth anniversary, and we are now looking ahead to its tenth anniversary. I am well aware that expectations for 3 are the highest, but… I feel a little sorry that I can’t say anything at the moment.
Takahashi:I am, of course, fully aware of the expectations placed upon me.
Asano:I really do feel that way. I just wanted to let you know that.
Asano would also share the following at the end of the interview:
“… as I mentioned earlier, the main pillar at the heart of it all is still Octopath Traveler. The series has reached a scale of 7 million copies sold, and I am keenly aware of the high hurdles to overcome for 3, so I am truly sorry that I have nothing to say yet.
However, I am very happy that you have such high expectations, so I will do my best to live up to them. Thank you for your continued support!”
While we wait for Octopath Traveler 3, we’ll be seeing Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 on Nintendo Switch 2 (they’re actually already out in Japan). Read more on that here.
