But has all of this critical success also translated into groundbreaking ratings? Spider-Noir becomes the Marvel show with the second-best ratings during its opening week
Spider-Noirquickly swung its way into Nielsen’s Top 10 charts, which track how many minutes a show has been streamed during a specific period of time. In its opening week (from May 25 to 31), Spider-Noir was watched for an astounding 851 million minutes, earning the No. 2 spot on the list, only behind Netflix‘s The Boroughs at 1.74 billion
A key detail to take into consideration is that all eight episodes of Spider-Noir were released at once, which means those 851 million minutes of viewership amount to the entire season. On the contrary, most other shows have a weekly release strategy, so their viewership numbers account for fewer episodes. That being said, the web-slinger’s latest project has become the second-most-watched show during its opening week
To put into perspective how astonishing Spider-Noir’s ratings are, here are the top 10 most-streamed Marvel shows during their opening week, and how many episodes each one had:
- Hawkeye– 852 millionminutes (two episodes)
- Spider-Noir– 851 million minutes (eight episodes)
- Loki– 731 million minutes (one episode)
- Echo– 731 million minutes (five episodes)
- Ironheart– 526 million minutes (three episodes)
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier– 495 million minutes (one episode)
- Secret Invasion– 461 million minutes(one episode)
- Loki season 2– 446 million minutes (seven episodes, including six from the first season)
- WandaVision– 434 million minutes (two episodes)
- Agatha All Along– 426 million minutes (two episodes)
One of the disadvantages of releasing all episodes of a series at once is that viewership numbers may drop significantly after a single week. While Echo performed extremely well during its opening days, it did so with five episodes total. However, the Disney Plus show didn’t even make it into Nielsen’s top 10 during its second week, given that fans had already watched the entire season. So did the same fate await the wall-crawler?
Interestingly, Spider-Noir was streamed a staggering 739 million minutes during its second week, earning the fourth spot in Nielsen’s top 10. That’s a very promising sign, as audiences didn’t immediately lose interest in the wall-crawler’s latest adventure after its release
Spider-Noir has two different formats: Authentic Black and White and True-Hue Full Color. As such, the show has a lot of rewatch value, since audiences can see the show in black-and-white first and then rewatch it in its colored version. This could also be one of the key factors why the series had strong numbers during its second week on the air
Spider-Noir’s 11 Emmy nominations and astonishing viewership numbers are key indicators that the show could be back for a second season. After all, Cat Hardy actress Li Jun Li revealed that most members of the cast have contractual obligations for a second season, if it ever comes to be. Besides, many mysteries still remain, such as whether Ben Reilly was really Peter Parker in disguise. There’s room for more stories to come, and interest from fans is definitely there, so why not give season 2 a go?
