‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ eyes $67m third weekend as box-office reign continues

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is showing little sign of slowing down, with the Tom Holland-led superhero film on course to top the North American box office for a third consecutive weekend.
The Sony Pictures release earned $19 million on Friday and is projected to collect around $67 million over the weekend. That would take its domestic total to approximately $782.8 million after just 17 days in theatres.
The milestone would place “Brand New Day” at No 5 on the all-time domestic box-office chart, closing in on “Avatar”, which stands at $785.2 million, while moving ahead of “Top Gun: Maverick” at $718 million.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Holland alongside Zendaya and Sadie Sink, the film recently became the fastest title to cross $700 million at the domestic box office.
Meanwhile, two new releases are competing for third place this weekend.
Warner Bros’ sci-fi survival film “The End of Oak Street” earned $8.1 million on Friday, including Thursday previews, and is heading towards a debut of around $20 million. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as members of a family whose suburban neighbourhood becomes overrun by prehistoric predators.
The film, which carries an $80 million production budget, received a B CinemaScore from audiences. It currently holds an 85 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 77 percent audience rating.
Paramount Pictures’ “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie” is also projected to earn around $20 million during its opening weekend after collecting $7.3 million on Friday, including preview screenings.
Directed by Cal Brunker, the animated feature includes Carter Young, Mckenna Grace, Terry Crews, Jennifer Hudson and Snoop Dogg among its voice cast. The film received an A CinemaScore and has already collected $38.3 million across 52 international markets.
Its predecessor, “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie”, debuted with $22.7 million domestically in 2023 and went on to earn $205 million worldwide, surpassing the $144 million global haul of the franchise’s first theatrical film in 2021.
While the two newcomers compete for third place, Universal’s “The Odyssey” is expected to retain the No 2 position in its fifth weekend. The film is projected to add around $23 million, taking its domestic total to approximately $504.4 million.
Rounding out the top five is music documentary “Katseye: Wild Hearts”. Directed by Nadia Hallgren and centred on the girl group Katseye, the film is expected to open with around $3.8 million from 724 North American screens.
Other theatrical releases arriving this weekend include “The Rivals of Amziah King”, starring Matthew McConaughey; Kristen Stewart-led stoner comedy “The Wrong Girls”; and Green Day-inspired comedy “Nimrods”, featuring Mason Thames and Mckenna Grace.
