‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Breaks Major Disney+ Record Ahead of Streaming Rollout

Spider-Man: Brand New Day made MCU history, breaking a Disney+ record even as its streaming rollout begins to take shape. The Tom Holland-led film hit theaters on July 31 and immediately broke multiple records, including the biggest domestic opening weekend ever, a mark previously held by Avengers: Endgame. The film took an approach that set it apart from previous Spider-Man movies. Director Destin Daniel Cretton brought his vision to the screen with a wider ensemble than usual, giving the sequel an unprecedented amount of Disney+ connective tissue.

Brand New Day now holds the record of being the MCU film with the most Disney+ characters to originate from different shows on the streaming platform. Jon Bernthal makes his first MCU film appearance as Frank Castle, reprising the Punisher after Daredevil: Born Again and his own Special Presentation, The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Florence Pugh, who made her MCU debut in Black Widow before appearing in Hawkeye, also returns as Yelena Belova, helping Spider-Man as he struggles to contain Sadie Sink’s telepath, Jean Grey.

Mark Ruffalo is back as Bruce Banner, with the film leaning into his Savage Hulk roots. Ruffalo is best known for theAvengers films, but he was also seen in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Sheila Rivera, Kingpin’s former aide in Daredevil: Born Again, appears in the film’s opening montage as New York’s new mayor, presenting Spider-Man with the Key to the City. That gives Brand New Day four characters with major ties to Disney+, which is unexpected for a Spider-Man film.

This unusual cast list arrives as the picture of Brand New Day’s digital pipeline becomes clearer. Blu-ray.com tentatively listed the film’s Blu-ray release for November 17, 2026, 109 days after its theatrical debut. Ideally, the digital/VOD window should open earlier, but that gap could widen given how strongly the film is performing.

Before release, Brand New Day had favorable projections, and analysts expected it to do well; it is a Spider-Man movie, after all, and those almost always print money. Still, it has exceeded expectations by a mile.

The film crossed $2 billion worldwide in about three weeks, becoming the first Spider-Man movie to reach that milestone, beating Avengers: Infinity War’stheatrical run. This kind of performance gives Sony every reason to keep it in theaters longer. Spider-Man: No Way Home, which finished around $1.9 billion, took 88 days to reach digital and 116 days to arrive on physical media. It’s only natural that Brand New Day, the bigger hit, could spend more time in theaters.

There is also the Sony factor. Brand New Day is a collaboration between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, so both sides benefit from maximizing the theatrical window before the film moves through VOD, Blu-ray, Netflix, and eventually Disney+. Sony’s output deal sends its films to Netflix first in the Pay 1 window, with Disney+ coming later in the Pay 2 window. So while Brand New Day will eventually bring its Disney+-connected cast to streaming, subscribers should expect Netflix first and Disney+ sometime in 2027 at the earliest.

Which Other MCU Movies Did Brand New Day Beat To Attain New Disney+ Milestone?

Brand New Day’s Disney+ record may come as a surprise given that previous MCU films featured numerous characters from the platform. Unlike Brand New Day, which draws from a wide variety of series, those films mostly focused on characters from a single Disney+ show.

For example, The Marvels was a major Disney+ crossover, but most of its small-screen contingent came from Ms. Marvel. Kamala Khan and her family, Muneeba, Yusuf, and Aamir Khan, were all from the same series. The other Disney+-linked names were Nick Fury, fresh off Secret Invasion, and Monica Rambeau from WandaVision.

Another film with heavy Disney+ ties is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but it was connected to far fewer shows. Kang, Mobius, and Loki were tied to Loki, while Jimmy Woo was from WandaVision. Similarly, Thunderbolts* drew heavily on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Brand New Day beats those films by making its Disney+ roster more diverse, spreading the love across four separate shows rather than one or two.

Most people were surprised when it was first announced that the Punisher would feature in Brand New Day, given his R-rated background. The movie, however, made it work effectively, winning over theatrical audiences who may not have warmed to him during his streaming days. Bringing in the Hulk was also historic, since the Jade Giant had never appeared in a Spider-Man film. Yelena brought much-needed humor to a story filled with heartbreaking scenes, and her sauna conversation with Peter has already become iconic. Sheila Rivera’s addition also served as a clever confirmation of who replaced Kingpin after he was cast out as New York’s mayor inDaredevil: Born Again.
