Sony’s PlayStation 6 is the next-gen console from the company that is rumored to launch by 2027. However, Sony’s CEO, Hiroki Totoki, says that the launch date for the console is still not confirmed. This has been revealed by the Sony CEO in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, and there she has also stated that the future of Sony is now entertainment instead of electronics. So, the company that started its journey as a console maker is now making a shift towards IP-Driven Entertainment businesses that include movies, music, and games. The recent success of the movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Sony’s summer 2026 financial results support the logic behind the decision taken by the company. Is Sony going the right way?
Why PS6 Release Date Still Remains Unconfirmed?
Sony has always maintained a gap of 5 or six years between its current and next-gen consoles. It’s been six years since the launch of PlayStation 5 console, but Sony is still unconfirmed about the release of its next-gen console PS6 in the market. The main reason behind it is the increasing prices of components and their shortage in the market, and Sony’ CEO, Hiroki Totoki, commented on the ongoing chip shortages in the same interview with a statement “Considering that importance, we need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape”.Rising memory prices are not only impacting the release of the next-gen consoles, but their prices also remain uncertain, as Sony’s CEO further says “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices,” However, the fans believe that Sony’s strategic shift towards IP-driven businesses in causing a delay in the release of their next-gen console.
Sony’s Financial Gains Now Come from IP- Driven Businesses?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed over $2.02 billion worldwide at the box office following its release on July 31, 2026. While total box office gross reflects ticket sales rather than direct studio profit, Sony Pictures has already secured its highest-grossing release of all time. But the best part here is that the movie managed to sell an estimated 316,000 additional copies of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game generating $11 million in revenue.
Also, A recent Summer 2026 Games Sales Update from Video Games Industry Finance Cheat Sheet reveals that in the first quarter of Sony’s 2026 financial year, operating income from its game and network services division increased by $339.6m (¥54.1bn) to $1.27 billion (¥202bn) as the company received its first tranche of an estimated half-a-billion-dollar tariff refund. However, sales, stayed flat, increasing just 0.06% year-on-year from $5.88bn (¥936.5bn) to $5.89bn (¥937.1bn). The report reveals that executives at Sony might be keeping their fingers crossed and hoping that GTA 6 release might get the revenue back on track for the company.
Sony has been observing an increasing revenue coming from its game and network division services and this includes its premium subscription plan PlayStation Plus. However, the revenue from hardware sales stays flat and this puts a doubt on the success of PS6. Sony is expecting that GTA 6 might push sales for its PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles in the market, but will GTA 6 create market for a next-gen console, PS6, that will launch with a heavy price tag? Probably no, and this could be the reason why Sony wants to feature more on its IP- driven businesses.
Sony’s IP-Driven Business Strategy Divides Fans
Overall, the fans are not happy with Sony, as its decision on ending production of physical games discs from January 2028 onwards has not been taken well by the gaming community. PS6 delay however, has not been a major concern for some of the fans, as they believe that PS5 runs most of the challenging games at optimum performance levels. A fan has posted on Gaming subreddit“Ive qued at midnight and bought all PS systems since ’95, not im not sure we need to rush PS6. Current games look and play great and the price of RAM and drives aren’t coming down anytime soon. The PS5 pro has gotten even more expensive so yeah… nah.”So, the market is not ready for a next-gen console that launches at a heavy price of $1000 or more.
A lot of fans are also not okay with a PS6 console that launches without a disc drive and a fan post on the same subreddit in this context says “Not me because if the ps6 has no disk drive then I won’t be updating as 95% of my games are on disk.”Sony might be selling more digital games, but a PS5 console with a disc drive is still the most sought-after console in the market. This overall reduces the market for Sony’s PS6 to a large extent and that’s the reason why Sony is not in a rush to release the new console. Also, consoles are sold at a lower profit margin than games, and with rising component costs, it would be difficult for the console makers to keep the prices of the next-gen consoles under control.
But there is set of fans on a popular gaming forum NeoGaf, who believe that Sony as a company has lost direction. A fan has posted on the forum “The obvious question is why Sony can’t simply pick a date and move forward. The answer is that the company has changed considerably from the electronics giant it once was. Under Totoki, Sony has increasingly shifted toward an IP-driven entertainment business, with movies, music and games now accounting for the vast majority of its revenue.” The post reveals that Sony has been using its biggest game franchises like the God of War to generate revenue outside the console business by turning them into movies and shows. Sony is making use of its successful IPs and changing them into a successful business opportunity for the company.
Sony has moved on from being only a console maker to a company that has the power to provide entertainment through its various successful IPs. Sony entered the market with a promise of delivering content that suited people across all generations with varied interests and this resulted in a PlayStation Games library that is one of the best in the entire gaming industry. With changing market situations, Sony now has bigger power to hold the release of its next-gen console and wait for the market pressure to ease down. Till then, Sony will continue using its IP assets for achieving success with the help of a IP-Driven Business strategy, but a PS6 console release will definitely come when the market is right for its launch.
