MUMBAI: Tamil entertainment is getting ready for a new VIZHA, and Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) is bringing the invitation. The broadcaster has unveiled Sony VIZHA, the name and identity of its new Tamil general entertainment channel, which is set to launch in October 2026.
Marking SPNI’s entry into Tamil entertainment, Sony VIZHA will focus on premium programming rooted in Tamil culture, language, emotion and everyday realities, while aiming to give its content a scale that can travel beyond the market.
The channel will bring together original fiction, global reality formats, movies and tentpole entertainment, with programming planned across television and digital. The proposition is designed to combine the intimacy of Tamil storytelling with a broader production ambition.
The name and logo were unveiled on Independence Day through a rendition of Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu, performed by children. The invocation, traditionally sung at the beginning of important occasions across Tamil Nadu, became the creative starting point for the channel’s identity.
‘Vizha’ means celebration or festival in Tamil, and Sony VIZHA uses the word to frame its offering as a celebration of Tamil stories, talent, music, family, aspirations and popular entertainment.
The visual identity uses yellow and electric blue. Yellow draws from colours associated with celebration in Tamil Nadu, including turmeric and marigold, while electric blue is intended to give the brand a contemporary and premium character.
Rajaraman Sundaram, chief content officer – South Regional, Sony Pictures Networks India, said the broadcaster was entering the market with “humility” and “respect”, while aiming to create stories that feel close to home and connect with a new generation of Tamil viewers.
He said the channel would look to tell stories that are “sharper, faster, funnier” and willing to look beyond the traditional four walls of the home, while retaining the scale and craft associated with Sony’s content.
The launch also draws on the imagery of Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu, particularly its idea of Tamil pride spreading in every direction. For Sony VIZHA, that translates into stories beginning in Tamil Nadu but being imagined with the ambition to reach audiences beyond the region.
With its October launch, Sony VIZHA will add another contender to Tamil Nadu’s crowded general entertainment landscape, betting on a mix of local cultural familiarity and wider-format entertainment.
