While Sony’s support for the PlayStation VR2 has been quite lacking since the headset’s launch, it looks like the company is getting ready to distance itself further from VR gaming. According to ZDNet Korea , Sony has transferred 43 of the patents it holds in the US to Meta. The transfer of these patents took place between June and September this year, and revolves around technologies for virtual, augmented, and mixed reality
The bulk of these patents were signed by Sony between 2010 and 2022, and focused on processes that would help the company design and develop its own VR headsets. The Confirmatory Assignment agreement that was signed between Sony and Meta back in December 2025 indicates that a total of 419 global patents will be transferred, with 180 of them being in the US and the remaining having been filed in Japan, China, Korea, and Europe, among other places.
Sony itself is yet to make any announcement regarding its plans for PlayStation VR2. However, the company’s general silence about the VR headset would indicate to many that we might not see a third-generation follow-up when the PS6 finally comes out. The PSVR2 was launched in February 2023, and while Sony had quite a few games lined up at the time, first-party support in the following years has been quite lacking, and third-party studios have been left to decide on their own whether or not they want to support it.
While the PlayStation VR2 headset is considered by many to be excellent, common consensus is that the lack of backwards compatibility with the PS4’s PlayStation VR led to a small library, ultimately hurting Sony’s VR aspirations. To alleers to use it as a VR headset on PCs, which ended up giving the headset a small boost in sales
For its part, Meta recently unveiled its next major outing in the VR space – the Meta VR Glasses. One of the device’s defining features is the fact that it isn’t as bulky as the traditional VR headset. Rather, it has been designed to more closely resemble a pair of sunglasses, with all of the hardware and battery powering it being broken out into a separate box that remains connected to the glasses with a cable and can be kept out of the way when the glasses are in use.
Meta boasts that its new VR Glasses are five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3, thanks in large part to the fact that the glasses themselves only have the display and necessary sensors, all housed in a magnesium alloy construction. It is also going to be the first IMAX Enhanced-certified VR device in the market when it hits store shelves in Spring 2027 with a price tag of $1,300.
As for the PlayStation VR2, Sony brought its price down from the $549.99 it launched at to $399 in February 2025. The company also released a bundle that included the headset and a copy of Horizon Call of the Mountain for the same price.
