Sony Group’s PlayStation platform reached a record 125 million monthly active users in June 2026, demonstrating continued audience growth even as hardware sales, third-party software revenue, and total playtime declined.

Monthly active users increased 2% from the prior year and reached the highest level Sony has recorded for the month of June. The metric includes unique accounts that played games or used online PlayStation services during the final month of the quarter.

Total PlayStation playtime declined 4% during Sony’s fiscal first quarter. The comparison was affected by major game launches and seasonal content updates that supported unusually strong engagement during the prior-year period.

Game & Network Services sales were essentially flat at ¥937.1 billion, compared with ¥936.5 billion a year earlier.

The segment received an ¥81.7 billion benefit from foreign-exchange movements. Without that currency contribution, lower hardware unit sales and weaker non-first-party game software revenue would have created a more visible decline.

Game & Network Services operating income increased 37% to ¥202 billion from ¥148 billion.

The ¥54.1 billion earnings increase benefited from U.S. tariff refunds and favorable currency movements. Those gains more than offset restructuring costs and investments connected with Sony’s next-generation gaming platform.

Adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization increased to ¥228.1 billion from ¥177.9 billion.

The results indicate that PlayStation’s expanding user base and recurring network economics are supporting profitability even when console hardware and individual game sales fluctuate.

Sony’s broader quarterly performance also showed significant operating leverage.

Consolidated sales increased 8% to approximately ¥2.84 trillion, while operating income surged 40% to ¥476.5 billion. Operating margin expanded 380 basis points to 16.8%.

However, Sony said consolidated sales declined approximately 1% on a constant-currency basis.

The difference shows that the weaker yen made the reported top-line performance look substantially stronger than the underlying sales trend. Operating-income growth was driven primarily by Imaging & Sensing Solutions and Game & Network Services.

Net income attributable to Sony shareholders increased 32% to ¥342.2 billion, while diluted earnings per share rose to ¥57.82 from ¥42.84.

Sony raised its fiscal 2026 operating-income forecast by ¥120 billion to ¥1.72 trillion. The company also increased its sales forecast by ¥200 billion to ¥12.5 trillion and its net-income outlook by ¥50 billion to ¥1.21 trillion.

The revised forecast assumes an operating margin of 13.8%, compared with the previous estimate of 13%.

Sony did not incorporate the potential financial effect of the July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake into its outlook.

The company suspended production at its Kumamoto semiconductor facility following the earthquake, while facilities in Nagasaki, Oita, and Kagoshima resumed production after avoiding significant building or equipment damage.

The PlayStation user record is particularly important because Sony is investing in a next-generation platform while attempting to generate more recurring revenue from its installed audience.

The latest quarter shows that PlayStation engagement remains broad, with 125 million monthly users supporting rising gaming profit even as playtime and traditional product sales face difficult comparisons.

“Total PlayStation Monthly Active Users reached 125 million accounts in June, up 2% year-on-year and a record high for the month of June.”
